  1. Default Air pump questions

Well, I am still waiting for my tank to cycle (day 26 but I'm not counting) so I am spending my time planning future purchases. Last week, the heater than came with the set broke so I bought a new (better) one....and now I'm dreaming about air pumps & bubblers. This tank really needs to start cycling so I won't spend so much time finding stuff to purchase while I'm waiting. I would really like a bubbler/air pump but am not sure it will work. I have looked at the tetra whisper and the tetra whisper deepwater pumps. The problem I am having is there is no place to put the pump above the water level that will not be an eyesore which is what the regular tetra whisper requires. The deepwater tetra whisper says it can be placed on the floor or above the water line for a freshwater tank and to use a air check valve. Do any of you have an air pump below the tank water level and if so, what pump did you use?

You do realise that the bubbles are mainly for your benefit and of very little use to your fish?

My air pump is a Fusion 500, and it is below the water level, with a check valve installed.

Bubbles l00k g00d t0 s0me pe0ple and they add a little 0xygen t0 the water by adding agitation at the surface, but with g00d filter return p0siti0ning y0u can d0 m0re f0r 0xygenati0n than bubbles ever will. If y0u like the bubbles get a pump but y0u d0n't have t0 have 0ne, it might add a little help with y0ur cycling th0ugh. Y0u can always put a screw in the wall and hang the pump 0ff a string ab0ve the tank- l00ks like bum, it will w0rk.
When in d0ubt read it until it makes sense, then read it again!

I put a $10 Petco filter I had laying around with a few feet of tubing and a simple airstone in my tank during the cycling process.

I'll take it out once the tank is established and ready for new occupants. My two hob filters provide plenty of surface movement for airation.

I have a top fin air pump purchased at pet smart. Works nicely and can be put anywhere, except in the tank lol.

I also have the Top Fin pump from Petsmart. You can place the pump below the water level, with a check valve installed, if you have a drip loop, with the check valve hanging below the pump. If the pump is lower than the check valve, even with the valve, there is always the possibility of water backing up into the pump if it isn't running (for whatever reason). See my very bad illustration below -

I have a Tetra Whisper, the dual valve unit, and it's on the floor with a check valve on it. I've had it his way for a long time, even before I upgraded to my 75gal tank. No problems have come up.

If there is a shelf 0r a place t0 screw in a shelf under the stand, y0u can put the pump there, but set it up like in gr0nlaura's diagram. M0st excellent eff0rt, BTW, gr0nlaura. I especially dig the fish!
