moving house ideal time to change substrate or not ?
Hi guys all settled in to our new house the only thing that's missing is our aquarium.
I was debating on getting a new tank but money restrictions means I'm gonna give my old tank a new lease of life. I ideally want to change the substrate as my gravel is looking pretty tired and I dont really wanna transport the tank with the gravel still in the tank. I want to use sand as my new substrate so what I was thinking was leaving some of the old gravel in some tank water and then when I manage to get the aquarium up and running putting a layer of the original gravel that wont be seen and putting sand on top of that. If that sounds like a plan how would be the best way to transport the gravel ? In a bucket with lid ? The journey to ne house from old house is about 45 to 50 minutes. Also whats the best way to transport the filter ? Should I empty the filter parts in tank water wilk the bacteria survive 50 minutes ?

Don't bother taking the gravel. If you put it in under the sand it will work its' way to the surface anyway. Most of your beneficial bacteria is found in your filter media, so as long as you keep it wet during the move you will be fine as long as it only takes a day or less to transfer it over.

+1 to the above
I have done that before when moving and everything worked out fine for me (no ammonia spike)If you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.
