well the next colour on the chart was 0.25 so i was guessing it was in between that colour

i do frequent water changes should i ever hoover the gravel removing substrate or is that rarely done

also does water changes of 50% stress out the fish

[QUOTE=Limming;1169125]If you have a lid over the tank take it off, I don't see any of the stock being a threat for jumping, this will help cool the tank down.

when you say lid do u mean the condensation tray that i have between the hood ?

I'd vacuum 1/2 the gravel each time you do a water change - but you shouldn't remove any of the gravel. It should stay in place. If you have live plants, just vac where you can.

50% water change should not stress the fish as long as you replace the water with conditioned water (using something like Prime or Tetra Aqua safe) and try to match the temp in the tank. Since your tank is running warm, you could drop it a couple of degrees.

D0n't replace filter cartridges until they fall apart, just rinse them 0ut by swishing it ar0und in the tank water that y0u rem0ved during PWC.

    Rem0ve anything that encl0ses the t0p 0f the tank - can0py, h00d , lighting, etc. exp0sed water will dr0p the temp.

could you put some window screen over it? Something makeshift until the weather cools down?
Or at least leave the lid open on the hood and the lights out as much as possible.

As for vacuming there are tons of products out there. here's one. check them all out on amazon or big als or fosters and smith. you'll find something that suits your needs.

++ to this. NEVER replace any of your filter media - even though the mfg instructions may suggest you do so - unless it's literally falling apart. Any time your toss a filter cartridge you are throwing away all the good bacteria you have worked so hard to build. As longshot said - if it's REALLY dirty, rinse the filter cartridge gently in old tank water otherwise leave it alone. If you've been replacing filter media that may be why you're showing ammonia. you've been starting a mini cycle each time you throw away your Beneficial Bacteria.

    I had heard fr0m s0me0ne that: f0r every .1 y0u g0 up in pH that it acts as a x10 multiplier f0r amm0nia EG if y0ur ph was at 7.0 and amm0nia was at 1ppm - If y0u raised the pH t0 7.1 the amm0nia w0uld have the same effect as if it were actually 10ppm. I d0n't kn0w the validity 0f this statement but I figure I w0uld menti0n it.

Longshot, that statement is very wrong, though an increased ph will cause increased ammonia tox. Its not that drastic. Ill see if i can find the chart some where
