Thread: seeded my tank

  1. Default seeded my tank

I guess thats what you call it, lol. My 29g has been up and running for about 2 1/2 weeks now. I am doing a fish cycle (i know most are against it, but its how i have always done it) I have not lost a fish yet either during this cycle. Today I tested the ammonia and it was between 1.0 and 2.0. That's the highest I have seen it since the tank was started. Today was my day to do a filter change in all me tanks, so I took the old filters from my 5g and 10g and put them in my 29g. I figure the good bacteria on them will help the cycle go better. The filter out of the 5g is a small plastic cartridge filter from an air driven thing so i just laid it in the tank, and the one out of the 10g is a regular filter cartridge out of my aqua-tech so i slide it in the aqua-tech filter on my 29g.
10 gal tropical tank (mainly snails w/7 fish), 5 rats, 4 parakeets, 1 senegal parrot, 2 degus, 1 snake, 1 blue tongue skink, 3 mice, 1 rabbit, 1 ferret, 5 cats, 1 dog

Should work great. I bet by this weekend you will see 0 across the boards.

another option (for the future, if you get more tanks) is to run your new filter in conjunction with an established filter on an established tank to seed it. Works great, but both tanks need to be monitored after switching the new filter to the new tank as the bacteria is in essense "split" between the two filters. I have done this several times and it always produces a relatively silent cycle (no ammon, trites). Good luck!
36g corner bow, heavily planted with java moss, windelov, java fern, anubias barieri, crypts, anacharis, and african fern. 2 honey gourami, 9 cardinals, 4 neons, 5 cherry barbs, 5 sterbai cory, 1 brochis splendens, unknown number red cherry shrimp
16g bow, lightly planted with java moss, java fern. 4swordtail tetra, 1 male betta
10g 4 pomacea bridgessi, a million cherry shrimp, java moss, windelov fern, anubia, java fern

next time i start up a tank it will be when its time to do a filter change and i will just use the old cartridges to seed the new tank from the beginning. but thanks for the info.

    Great suggestion there.

Seeding a new tank once you have several gets easier. Any more those of us with ridiculous numbers of tanks are able to stabilize a new tank in only a few days.
    8 tanks running now:
    1x 220 gallon, 2x55 gallon, 1x40 gallon long, 1x29 gallon, 1x20 gallon long, 1x5.5 gallon, 1x2 gallon
Gouramis, barbs, rasboras, plecos, corys, tetras, fancy guppies, swordtails, ottos, rainbow shark, upside-down catfish, snails, and Max and Sparkles the bettas.
