Thread: Denison Barbs?

Hmm well I know they're at least three known variants found in the wild in the same river system in India, they all vary slightly with the coloration but it's hard to detect. The farm breed ones in the aquarium trade are the ones that will attain a size of 6''+ when fully mature.

There's also an albino farm breed one, really not a big fan of how that looks tho.

You could always go with Rummy nose tetras, similer schooling behavior and coloration without the size and space problems.

    Just another option for you.

Ah, I feel for you. These are some wonderful fish, but they deserve a 5 foot and over tank, not 4. True, a species only tank of these could work in a 55 gallon if cared properly, but with how fast these move and their maximum size, a 4 foot tank is a just quite not enough for these fish.

I agree with @steeler1, Rummynose tetra are a great option. You could fit a lot of these also.

I know they get quite large but I would either trade them in at the LFS or just buy a 190g :P
Dennisons don't mix with high energy co2. Returning fish when they outgrow the tank...... I know it's acceptable to some, I find it a short sighted and terrible practice.

If you want the best out of Dennisons get something 5 ft long, stick in a serious flow pump, decorate as a river. Get a good sized filter and have it cascade in to get air into the water and don't set the heater higher than 23C.

Thanks for all the great input! I don't want to "Returning fish when they outgrow the tank." if it is considered terrible. I have actually been looking to see if that is a common practice or frowned upon. So I think I will definitely get some Rummy Nose tetras and maybe some H. Rasboras and Rainbows. Any other suggestions are welcomed. Thanks again for your help!

Yeah, what is generally advised is to either buy the tank and then find appropriately sized fish for it (full grown), or choose the fish you want and buy the tank that will fit them full grown.

You are to be commended to accepting the advice given to you!

I did end up getting 7 x Harleys. One passed away, so I'm left with 6. I ordered more Australian Rainbows and some Rummynose tetras from the LFS so those should be getting in this week! Thanks again for the help. I'll just have to admire the Denison's at the LFS until I get me a 120g :P

I have had my plans squashed m0re than 0nce s0 far in this h0bby, but f0r the sake 0f the fish and f0r the longevity 0f my pleasure in keeping them, it is best t0 plan these things 0ut. Since I l0st my 150g I have had t0 put my p00r fish back int0 a 55g and I feel like a bum f0r it, but I d0 a l0t 0f water changes t0 try t0 keep them healthy as p0ssible until I can get an0ther large tank. As much as it hurts me, I am g0ing t0 have t0 reh0me s0me 0f my babies s00n- but it is 0ut 0f necessity f0r their 0wn well being. Y0u are d0ing whats best f0r the fish by asking questi0ns with an 0pen mind and by taking the advice y0u asked f0r, many kud0s!
When in d0ubt read it until it makes sense, then read it again!
