Finally an Update!!
I actually got the thing together today! It's been a long few weeks collecting stuff, been trying to do it somewhat cheaply so I took my time. I did end up getting the Rena XP4 450gph canister, no point in messing about lol.
1) Glass top, it ended up being an odd tank with a glass brace so I had to silicone in some custom plastic blocks to hold the two tops in place.
2) 48" Single T5 Strip Light, not super bright but i'm not growing plants and it will keep the algae down.
3) Rena XP4
4) Hydor 300w inline heater, I hate how heaters look inside tanks
5) 100lbs of pool filter sand made by the florida silica sand company, cost $10 at home depot
6) Susquehanna River Driftwood off ebay
7) Rocks from the LFS
8) Pots from home depot
9) About $40 in plastic plants from Michaels, yes they contain metal, I made sure they were sealed with hot glue where I bent them. Besides the metal doesn't really matter anyway, even if a small amount was exposed and rusted the amount of leaching is negligible. People forget that the water goes through rusty pipes for miles before your fish ever see it lol.
Anyway here are a few pics, waters still a little cloudy, im pretty happy with the way the scape came out, it may not win any awards but I like it. It would really work well for geos so im gonna have to have at least a couple. My stock list it still up in the air, so feel free to make more suggestions. Im thinking 2-3 geos, 1 Super Red Severum, and 1 big centerpiece fish, probably an O, but im open to ideas.
And here's a full shot, the can is huge lol.

Looking good so far
I would have likely picked the same filter and heater combo as well. I really do like the Rena canister filtersIf you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.

Very nice...one question...the clay pots are for nursery/ egg-laying space, correct?...is this cichlid-specific, or do other species utilize the pots in this way?

We have fish!!!!!
Well my fish came in today. I ended up ordering fish from Jaff Rapps, super glad I did they look great. I decided on getting one Bahia Red Tail Oscar, he's a first generation wild bred, one true mouthbrooding Heros Severus, he's wild caught, and 3 Geophagus "Red Head Tapajos", they're first gen as well. They all look incredibly healthy. The sev and oscar are around 4-5", and the geos are 2". The sev is older and bigger at the same length and is more aggressive than the oscar, but I think it will be ok once the oscar settles in. He will outgrow the sev in a month anyway lol.
The lights are off right now while everyone settles in but I will be turning the lights on tonight and getting some pictures for you guys. Super excited for that!
Im thinking about naming the sev Hobbs as I know LH is gonna go nuts for this guy lol."At some point you aren't making the animal more dead...You are just making a bigger mess." - Demjor19

I've heard a lot of good things about Rapps, good luck with the fish and I can't wait to see them. When I go fishing I just throw sharp rocks in the water and wait for the dead fish to float to the top... Kingfisher
Everything happens for a reason. Sometimes that reason is you are stupid and make bad decisions.
I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.
A moderator on a fish forum should be able to identify an oscar... Don't you think?
Dear naps, sorry I hated you so much when I was a child... Love me

So yes, I know I promised pictures and haven't delivered lol. The Oscar and especially the severum are taking a long time to settle in and calm down. The Oscar is getting better but still not picture ready, he shed his slime coat in shipping and has been really pale, but he's getting more comfortable. The sev hides all the time but once he starts coming out ill get more pics.
Just to hold you guys over I do have a couple pics of the geos. They are doing great, it's like the 3 musketeers they are never apart from each other.
