Thread: Hello

  1. Default Hello

Just saying hello. I set up this account for research. I am 16 but have had fish for years.

Am interested in making an app to do with tropical fish and so I'm asking what you would want on it? Thanks

I ideally would want the following:

-Be able to determine the species of fish using a series of questions (kinda like that old kids game guess who)
-have info on max sizes, recommended stocking, suitable tank mates, non-suitable tank mates, pictures (male and female)

If I had my ideal app, as a beginner I would have loved to have an app that did the following:

    - Allow me to search for fish based on ease of care ("easy", "moderate", "hard"), water parameters (pH, hardness), temperature range, minimum tank size, and perhaps the size of an adult and a partial name ("tetra" to find all tetras, for instance). The aquarium wiki has all that info in the database, but it is not possible to filter the search using any of these parameters. Using this I could, for example, find all tetras that are easy to care, under 7 cm in size and like water of 6 dH, pH of 7.5 and 78 degree water. Or any other combination.

    - I'll second Hardy's vote for information on male/female photos and compatible tank mates. Also include what kinds of food they prefer, whether it is a shoaling fish, and where in the tank it likes to swim (top, middle, bottom).

    - A stocking calculator to estimate how overstocked or under-stocked a given tank is given size and filtration.

    It's a big list!

EDIT: an altogether different app, and perhaps much easier to create, is one that would allow me to keep a journal and log of my aquarium, including recording water parameters, significant events (Water changes, fish additions, chemical dosings, etc), plant and fish inventory, taking notes, and taking pictures! Perhaps even allow me to set reminders for filter changes and water changes, and allow me to see when the next one is due.

Ok, that is a lot. But I'll take everything into consideration. It may take a while as first I have to learn how to actually make apps haha.

Thanks for the helpful knowledge and more would be welcomed :)
