  1. Default Max temperature?

I wanted to know what temperature can a goldfish handle? I have a fish that needs a heater, and wanted to know if a goldfish can go in the tank with it?

By fighting fish, I'm assuming y0u mean a Betta. A male betta may get a little testy with guppies if they have the big fan tails and might nip at them.
    As f0r the g0ldfish, it sh0uld be kept (f0r many species) between 68 - 72 F. Bettas appx 76-82F and guppies appx 72 - 85 F.
But m0st imp0rtantly, what size tank? A g0ldfish sh0uld n0t be put in a tank smaller than 20 gall0ns, even by himself. They get pretty big- depending 0n the breed.

Fancy gold fish need a solo 29.... They get too big and are messy eaters. As for housing a gold fish and betta. I wouldnt, the increase in heat might stress the goldy, and a decrease in heat would shorten the bettas life span. If you have the space for the gold fish (keeping in mind most of the species get 12"+ easily), look into dojo loaches, mosquito fish, and other cold species fish.

My tank is only 21 gallons, I have only one Goldfish and one Betta at the moment and they are both in small separate tanks while I am setting up the 21 gallon tank. The betta is living in coldwater at the moment and has been for a while now, but I have been speaking to people lately who say they should have a heater.

they can live in colder water. Heck there are people out there who keep them in a vase and barely feed the thing.... But those people would never get a full life healthy betta out of that deal. They color up nicer, and are way more playful in higher temps. Most people think bettas have a short 1 yr lifespan, and think 2 yrs is super. But in reality a good cared for betta can live easily 6 yrs.... As i said above cold water is likely to reduce their live span and cause all sorts of problems ( they have hard time digesting in cold water just to name one.)

    Bettas d0 well in a 5 gall0n with a heater and a filter. If y0u have all 0f that f0r him/her I w0uld suggest keeping the betta where it is and maybe c0nsider reh0ming the g0ldfish unless y0u plan 0n starting with a 30 gall0n tank f0r him. Mixing the th0se fish is n0t rec0mmended. Gen0cidex gave s0me g00d suggesti0ns f0r tank mates f0r the g0ldfish but it w0uld require m0re r00m than 21 gall0ns.

Thanks heaps for your help guys, I will keep them separate and just set up the other tank with the heater for my betta. I will also have to look into a larger tank for my goldfish as well.
