Thread: Fish question

  1. Default Fish question

While I am patiently waiting for my tank to cycle (as yet, no nitrite), I thought I would start researching fish to put in the tank. I REALLY like the cardinal tetras but from what I've read they are not a starter fish and they are very picky about pH. My water has a natural pH of around 7.6 so should I skip them?

Nice pick for your fish. I have always had some in at least one of my tanks. The pH thing isn't really that much of a concern. Reason being, your local lfs probably gets it's water from the same source as you do so their pH will be about the same as yours. If you take some time to acclimate them to your tank water (while floating the bag in your tank to get the temperature the same, use an eye dropper or turkey baster to take out some bag water and after discarding that into an empty bucket, suck up some of your tank water and drip it into the bag). Cardinals will be ok in 7.6 as I have mine in 8.2 pH. When your tank gets cycled cardinals will be ok in it.
Word of caution; when buying your cardinals make sure they have been in the fish store for a week or so. The only time I've lost a bunch was when I got greedy and bought them the day after they arrived at the fish store. Not only did mine pass away but the lfs had the same happen. When the "red" band isn't washed out on them they are doing pretty well.
Now I'm saying all this not knowing your tank, filter set-up. But I hope you have a large enough tank to get at least 8 cardinals to start and maybe add another 6 in a week or so. They do well in large schools, even if they are different sizes.
Warning; Bulldog Pleco guarding my Sons tank now..

Please remember; every keystroke has a consequence.

If you got a 20 long and your water is not rock hard I see no reason why you couldn't have cardinals. They do like some tannins and wood in their tank though.

+1 to strider's suggestions on purchasing Cardinals, also ask the dealer to put a small amount of food in the tank to see if they are eating, if cardinals are not acclimated they will not eat.
