One elegant-looking I saw earlier today while googling is to use molding all around the top edge of the stand. The molding goes up an inch or so higher than the bottom of the tank, all around it, to hide the tank's bottom frame. For this to work you would need a tank stand that exactly fits your tank.

Yep, you'd wanna be precise with the measurements for that one...did you see Cliff's stands in this thread?...gorgeous stands, gorgeous tanks, IMO: http://www.reefaquarium.com/2013/bui...quarium-stand/

I'm trying to wrap my head around what you guys are saying about the support for the tank, the fact that the EDGES need support, not the entire bottom of the tank...

That is correct. The glass does not touch the top - it's a BIG problem if it does. The black rectangular tank frame is what supports the entire tank. The glass sides of the tank are at the outer edges of the frame and this is where you want support from your stand. The bottom glass is not supportive at all. In my stand design, the 1-1/2 inch thickness of the 2x6 supports the frame, which supports the tank. That thickness is more than enough to hold up the tank. Cliff's design has more width on the top of the frame sides - a different design, with the same support.

Then when you take into consideration what gronlaura told me about how the box store metal stands support the edge only, it makes sense...I suppose the design of tanks, the way the glass is laid out, is support enough for the rest of the bottom of the tank?

The glass is very strong and it supports what's in the tank - substrate, plants, decor, etc.

At any rate, I am hoping to get my wood purchased this WE, and start building (and maybe finish) the stand before the WE is up...I was going to paint the stand, but now I am considering totally walling the stand with plywood, and just painting the outside. Do you guys think that would be ok?

You can finish it however you desire. Don't forget to have access for your equipment.

At this point, considering you guy's advice, I don't think I am going to put a top on the stand, after all...I need to figure out which type of styrofoam gronlaura mentioned.

It's the cheap, white styrofoam, like you get at the craft store. Menard's has it in a 2x8 foot sheet, 3/4 inch thick for about $2.

It doesn't need to be centered. You want the tank positioned over the 2x6 rectangle, flush on all 4 sides. It should not hang over and there should not be any part of the rectangle showing at the outer edges. If you make the stand larger, you will not be supporting the frame by the entire 2x6, but just on the inside edge. You want the stand dimensions, width and depth, to be the exact size of the tank frame.

Please do not build the stand larger than the tank dimensions. It will affect the support. Measure your tank and use those exact dimensions. If you build it 37 x 19, the 2x6 rectangle will extend 3/8 inch beyond the tank all the way around. That reduces the support provided by your 2x6 from 1-1/2 inch to 1-1/8 inch. It is the outer edges of the tank frame that need the best support. Add a plywood top that is larger than the stand if you want space around the tank, but build the stand to the tank dimensions.

No problem. When you start your build, I think you will see why I have been so insistent about the stand dimensions. I don't want you to think I am a "know-it-all", but in this particular instance, I do know my stuff. I think you will be very pleased with your stand.

I SO want to get it done so that I can get my tank out of storage and have a place to put it...I can plywood the sides no problem, but I have ZERO experience with making the doors that I want on the front...I have a neighbor whose brother is a cabinet maker, I may get with him if I can catch him...he's always very busy...or maybe Cliff can give me a few pointers, he has doors on his

No doors for me. One of my older cats (he's 17) has chronic urinary tract issues and has to stand up to piddle. He doesn't use his litter box, but likes to piddle against vertical objects. It's a full time job cleaning up after him, but he's been with me since he was 10 weeks old, so he's not going anywhere.

I have an idea for using a black acrylic type sheet and making it removable for cleaning. I will only need to do the front and the 2 sides. Going to work on it over the weekend.

Poor kitty, he's a senior citizen!....That sheeting idea sounds interesting...I'm thinking that I'm going to leave the back of the stand open, but it will be against a wall...so I'd like some simple doors on the front to get to the canister filter (I've decided I definately want to try one), and also, I'm going to put a little shelf in there for supplies.

Once again, back to the styrofoam pad...in looking at the link Cliff gave earlier, he is actually using a piece of foam board insulation on one of his tanks...is that what you are talking about?...if not, I guess it would still work fine, if he did it
