  1. Default Stocking 20 Gallon Tall Tank

    0 Not allowed!
    Hi everyone,

I'm returning to this hobby and haven't had an aquarium in about a decade or so now. I'm in the process of setting up a 20 gallon tank--a very tall hexagon--and have some questions about stocking. Ideally, I would love to try my hand at keeping angelfish, and while I know there's some discussion about a pair fighting, how do they survive going solo?

Additionally, and if it's reasonable enough to keep just one in this tall tank, what would be a decent and humane pairing for it? Depending on what I've read, dwarf gouramis are either nicely pugnacious enough to co-exist or don't have a chance in hell. Any personal experiences?

Thanks so much! Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

They can be kept solo, but not in a 20 gallon and definitely not in a 20 gallon hexagon tank. A single angelfish could fit in a 30 or more gallon tank with appropriate tankmates. Dwarf gouramis are pretty variable. You hear of some that are peaceful, some that are mildly aggressive all the way to downright bullies. If you want to keep angels and gouramis together, I would suggest the pearl gourami, which has a reputation for being very placid, as well as being closer in size to the angelfish.

I agree with the above. A 20 gallon tank is too small for an angel. I've had a couple of Dwarf Gourami's, one of them was kind of aggressive, the one I have now seems to be pretty peaceful (I've had him a few days). I take it you're looking to do a community tank. There are quite a few types of fish that would be great in a 20 gallon tank. If I was in your situation I'd probably get some type of Gourami. If you get a dwarf, I'd just get one. Then I'd probably get some small schooling fish. Tetra's perhaps. If you're looking for bottom dwellers that hang out together (I guess they school) you could go for some Cory's. Just do your research and ask around here. Good luck!

Hex tanks mean look at species that you'd normally fit in a 10g, you just have the luxury that you can have a mid level and a top level fish.

Tough tank to stock as pointed out, you could put some of the smaller tetras in there such as; Green neons, Embers, and Yellow phantom tetras. The dwarf rasbora species could work but most of them are hard to find. Most Corys would not work, a small school of pygmys "Corydoras pygmaeus" could because of their small size.

    Thanks again for the advice.

I guess I"ll begrudgingly give up on the angelfish idea for now despite my desire to try my hand at one with nothing else in the tank.

Otherwise, I had a couple questions about gouramis. I currently have two dwarfs in the tank as of this morning, and while they're a bit pugnacious and one is clearly more in charge, they're playing/fighting pretty harmlessly from what I can tell. My gut tells me they'll relax with more tankmates to distract them. I'm debating between a small school of pygmy corys, as mentioned, or perhaps 1 or 3 pearl gouramis if the two types can coexist. Thoughts again?

    Thanks very much.

Pearl gouramis get way to big to keep in a tank your size.

There is alot of good information on them here: http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j...48705608,d.cGE

Thanks Steeler. The article is a bit unclear though--could one pearl get along with the two dwarfs, and, if so, would that be decent enough stocking for the tank? I'm not sure I'd even want anything else past those three.

Generally speaking, gouramis are territorial and only one should be kept per tank. The only exceptions are in very large, well planted tanks or with peaceful species in a harem setting.

+ 1 to madagascariensis, If you had bigger tank your stocking plan could work.

A school of Tetras or Rasboras should work well for you, a group of 6-8.
