LFS Horror Stories
IDK if there's a similar thread somewhere on the forum, if there is I apologize. I thought it'd be cool if we could all share some LFS horror stories, bad advice, etc. I was inspired by my trip to PetSmart yesterday. Not really a horror story, but I was a little unsettled by the experience. I'll start off the stories.
I went into PetSmart, as it's the LFS with the widest selection of tropical fishies. I was in there looking to stock my recently cleared out, cycled, 10 gallon. I had a list of fish in mind so I went about looking in the many tanks to see if I could find them. I identified 2 of the 3 species of fish I was looking for so I stood around and waited for someone to help me. A girl eventually came over and helped me and I told her what I was looking to get. I was getting 1 Dwarf Gourami male and 4 Julii Cory's. When I told her I wanted 1 Dwarf Gourami, she wrinkled her brow, and said "You know they do better in pairs." To which I laughed, as I've owned them before and always do quite a bit of research on fish before I get them, and replied "No...They will fight. They are territorial." Not a big deal, but some expected LFS bad advice. She then went about netting the fish I wanted and bagging them. As she was doing that, I started asking about the filtration system they have. Apparently all of the tanks are filtered with and share the same water. So Tropical and the few cold water goldies, koi, and such, are living in the same temperature water. Doh! I did confirm that they have UV filtration to kill diseases and stuff so that's good. It's too bad all of my small LFS's have gone out of business over the years. Petsmart and Petco are the only ones nearby to purchase fish.
That's not really a horror story per say, just unsettling as I said. I'm sure you guys have some good horror stories or bad advice stories. Share them here!

Heres a kicker... I used to be friends with the head of the fish dept in a Portland OR area Petco - its mandated from high up that no matter what, they have to keep brackish conditions in their tank. She showed me the spec and everything. This is for stores that stock salt water as well just fyi, all fresh they treat with aquasalt but not to brackish levels. It wasnt til I came along that their pleco's and corries stopped dieing.
