Did you let a cup of your tap water sit for 24 hours before testing the pH?

There is no need to worry what you did to the filters or what you should be doing as long as the pH is that low. Cleaning the filters did not kill your cycle, low pH did. At a pH of 6.0 nitrifying bacteria stops growing, below that and it dies, at 5.0 pH or less you had no cycle before you messed with the filters. Understanding this makes it easy to understand why there is ammonia, but no nitrite or nitrate... there is no bacteria to convert the ammonia. One good side here, low pH means the ammonia is less toxic, however, when you start to raise that pH, the ammonia in the tank will become toxic so be careful here how quickly you raise the pH. You say you have other tanks now or in the past and this hasn't happened, you also say your tap water is consistently 7.0pH, consistency means it probably has good buffering (GH/KH). So now we need to figure out what is in this tank that is dropping its ability to hold a consistent pH. I seriously doubt one moss ball has done this, however, the symptoms of the moss are indicative of the pH/KH/GH problem, very few plants grow in a pH of 5.0. What is in this tank that you do not have in the others. What sort of substrate? What are those fake plants made of? What other sorts of decorations are in the tank? And it would be a good idea to test GH/KH of the tank and the tap.

When I go fishing I just throw sharp rocks in the water and wait for the dead fish to float to the top... Kingfisher
Everything happens for a reason. Sometimes that reason is you are stupid and make bad decisions.

I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.
A moderator on a fish forum should be able to identify an oscar... Don't you think?
Dear naps, sorry I hated you so much when I was a child... Love me

How many other tanks do you have and are they up and running now with no fluctuation in PH and if so how long have they been established?

I guess I should have kept the filter and just rinsed it....I suppose I will continue with pwc's to keep the pH up until the tank is cycled again.
It should help the ph until cycled again but I would definitely test for KH & GH especially to know for sure. Also if you live in an area where there have been recent storms or other issues sometimes additives are put into the tap that can change your water chemistry. Once we know your KH & GH we can help you out if the issue is due to your tap water having a low buffering capacity. I'd advise against chemical additives because every time you do a pwc you have to figure out just how much to add to not drastically alter you PH causing more problems...

Thanks for the advice so far....

The plants in the tank are plastic and silk....Marina and Top Fin brand...had similar ones in my last tank. The substrate is large stone-like gravel....nothing crazy.

The clarify, there is no significant ammonia being registered in the tank.

I will test the kHand gH and get back to you...hopefully tomorrow!

Any more suggestions are welcome in the meantime.

Well I'm not 100% sure why, but my pH has come back up to 6.0-6.5 and has sat there for 2 days now....maybe the coral & shells I put in there a few days ago?

I am still probably going to test the gH and kH, because it seems like the right thing to do, but in the meantime, thanks for the help....hopefully it stays stable!
