  1. Default Very low pH...can't seem to figure it out....HELP!

Long time reader, first time poster...

I have a 39 gal freshwater tank that I set up about two months ago. Recently, I had two mystery snails start to float and get very slimy, which from my understanding could mean they were stressed. I took the snails out of the tank, and did a water test using a Nutrifin mini master kit. Ammonia was nil (or close to it), no nitrates or nitrites, but the pH was between 4.5-5.0!

The water is cloudy and has been for about 3-4 weeks, which I kind of attributed to new tank syndrome. Without Nitrates registering, I'm wondering if my tank hasn't cycled yet, and the low pH is stalling it? I used old filter media from an established tank for 3 weeks to try and seed this one.

In my tank, I have 5 guppies, 7 tetras, Opaline Gourami, Red Wag Platy, 2 Juli corys, and a rubber lipped pleco. I also have a marimo moss ball (which has some slight browning on it....could this be the acid source?). The rest of my tank is comprised of artificial plants, decorations, and large gravel substrate.

Since I noticed the low pH, I've done 4 water changes in the course of 7 days (30% the first day, 50% the third day, 30% two days later, 30% the next day). I've also tested my tap water which appears to have a nice pH of 7.0ish.

Other things to note: I changed the filter, and added three artificial plants about a week before I noticed the low pH. I had not tested my water for about a month before i noticed thr low pH (I know, i know). I've also added fossilized coral rock, and some seashells last night in hopes of creating a pH buffer and getting it back up (is that how it works?).

I really don't want to have to resort to chemicals if at all possible, as everything I've read says they are a quick and temporary fix.

Really stuck here guys...any help would be appreciated!

PS...sorry for the long post....figured I'd get as detailed as possible on the first one to answer the basic questions!

    did y0u test regularly while cycling? and did y0u d0 a fishless cycle? when I cycled my 150 gall0n it t00k 5 weeks t0 c0mplete, 3 0f which were waiting f0r the nitrites t0 dr0p 0ut- but there is a huge difference in these scenari0s, 0bvi0usly. If y0u have amm0nia but everything else is flat, it s0unds like y0u haven't cycled. N0w, y0u have a fish in cycle situati0n which can take al0t l0nger- keep 0n th0se water changes t0 keep y0ur levels l0w as t0 n0t harm y0ur fish. I have heard 0f pe0ple using crushed c0ral t0 raise pH, s0 apparently it w0rks- but if y0u take it 0ut, it may crash y0ur pH again unless y0u d0 a bunch 0f testing 0ver a peri0d 0f time t0 see h0w much y0u need t0 leave in after getting the pH up. I have used tiny am0unts 0f baking s0da t0 raise the pH bef0re. just a pinch at a time, wait 24 h0urs- test- add a pinch, repeat. Use just en0ugh t0 keep up the pH when d0ing PWC's. Just a p0ssibility, sh0uld y0u run 0ut 0f ideas. Best 0f luck, h0pe all g0es well f0r y0u.
When in d0ubt read it until it makes sense, then read it again!

If you changed out your filter cartridges instead of swishing them around in a bucket of some clean water from your tank then you have removed the majority of BB and are starting your cycle over. This is also why you are seeing a drop in your ph. Continue testing for ammonia & nitrites until both are zero with nitrates, the daily pwcs needed to keep ammonia & nitrites below. 25ppm will help to stabilize your ph again also

+1 to that, you should never change your filters until they fall apart, regardless of what the filter manufacturer tells you

The only thing in your filter you need to change is carbon, and that is completely optional to have in your filter.

It's not the nitrates that tell you if the tank is cycled - it's 0 ammonia & 0 nitrites

With fish in the tank, you need to maintain an ammonia level of .25 until it drops to 0 on its own.

Other things to note: I changed the filter, and added three artificial plants about a week before I noticed the low pH. I had not tested my water for about a month before i noticed thr low pH (I know, i know). Like everyone else has already mentioned, it's not necessary to replace your filter media - just a swish in tank water - while you're cycling it's not even necessary to do that - unless you are feeding too much and excess food is gunking up the filter.
    Please see my responses above.

Have you checked the GH and KH of the tap water and tank water to determine the buffering capacity of each?
When I go fishing I just place a sharp rock in the water and sit there waiting for all the dead fish to float to the top... Kingfisher
Brutal honesty will be shown on this screen.
I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.
Tolerance is a great thing to have, so is the ability to shut up.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.

Haven't checked either the GH or KH, but never had any pH problems with my other tanks.

I guess I should have kept the filter and just rinsed it....I suppose I will continue with pwc's to keep the pH up until the tank is cycled again.

By acid source, I was referring to the fact that perhaps the brown spot on the moss ball would indicate decay, thereby releasing acid into the water and lowering my pH. My thought here was that there may be something physical in the tank that is creating an acidic environment, since regardless of the water changes, the pH continues to drop back down.

Also, I am aware that zero ammonia and nitrites indicate a cycled tank, which they were, but also that nitrates should be present if the tank is cycled. Without nitrates, I was thinking that the tank had not yet cycled.
