  1. Default Should I use used gravel?

A friend of mine donated enough gravel for a 55 gallon tank. The only problems are that he gave them to me in a giant bucket that I'm not sure what was in it before, his tank was not kept well and the substrate is filled with dead fish bones (horrible) and the gravel is a mix of colors, sizes and even particles of sand and tiny white rocks. Is this even worth cleaning and using?

Is Wisconsin in the heatwave part of the states? If so I'd spread it out in the yard, water it with the hose and let it fry in the sun for 48 hours before making up your mind.

It's only 80 here every day...not sure if that is a heat wave as it is pretty normal Wisconsin summer weather...

Even if you dont use it in the fish tank you can always use it outside.

But since gravel is pretty cheap I would not use it in your tank.

No, that would be Arizona, Nevada, California, (where Death Valley is) Utah, New Mexico and parts of Texas. I'm sure I missed a few areas (States) but I don't think Wisconsin is one of them. It was supposed to be 130 F+ in Death Valley today.
When in doubt, do a water change.

    ...full of fish bones...
asides from its condition, it does not sound like it is aesthetically pleasing either.
