Thought I'd share the other-OTHER love of my life, along with my partner and fishkeeping. Lucky and Daisy, my 3 month old rats. They are such sweethearts.

    When they first arrived.

Lucky on her first day with us.

Daisy (fawn hooded) and Lucky (mink hooded).

Lucky and Daisy -- chilling under the covers in my bed!

    Very cute looking little critters
If you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.

Oh dear, rats... Way too cute!! Kept rats for years. Gave it up because they kept breaking my heart. They do make nice pets though.

Ewww rats! Personally, I have never understood the allure, but to each their own I suppose.
When I go fishing I just throw sharp rocks in the water and wait for the dead fish to float to the top... Kingfisher
Everything happens for a reason. Sometimes that reason is you are stupid and make bad decisions.

I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
Dear naps, sorry I hated you so much when I was a child... Love me

Well, it's a highly sociable rodent that also happens to be quite intelligent.

Hahah I get that a lot HB. Really, they were the practical choice. Don't have room for a dog, flat mate is allergic to cats, considered rabbits but too messy, guinea pigs and chinchillas didn't seem to have much personality and also messy, mice are cute but smell awful, so rats were the ideal choice -- clean, intelligent and trainable, easy and cheap to take care of and don't take up much room. (Fun fact; there are no gerbils or hamsters in New Zealand. Only Rats and Mice. It is also illegal to keep pet ferrets.)

Dutchie yes it is very heartbreaking that they have such short lifespans. Seems so cruel when even a Tetra is likely to live longer!

For rats, they are kind of cute :o) I don't know if I could get past the negative thoughts associated with them (gutters and garbage and disease) to actually own one but they sound like a perfect solution for you. Also, have no doubt they are everything you say they are - clean and intelligent and all of the above.

ooooooh, they're precious! I have a friend that has rats (nacho & cheddar) and they're precious but yes like TD said heartbreaking due to their short lifespan.

SO CUTE!! I always thought owning a pet rat would be allot of fun, but I have a snake and sort of felt like I had to go one way or the other... I just couldn't handle the contradiction of feeding a rat to my snake... in front of my pet rat
