Thread: Removing a UGF

  1. Lightbulb Removing a UGF

    Hi there!

(I stated in an earlier post) I'm and old fart getting back into tropical fish. I've setup my old 55g flat back hex, with a UGF. It's what I am used to and had over 20yrs ago. Seems that things have changed and UGFs are not all they are cracked up to be. SO I'm going to take it out. My concern what will happen to my newly cycled tank. My tank just completed it's cycle this week (Tuesday) and I want to be prepared in case something happens.

    Thanks

    Rich

Do you have a filter running on that tank ?

If yes, was this filter running the whole time while you cycled your tank ?
If you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.

Yep. Running a Cannister filter; Fluval 406.

Without the UGF will I still need aeration?

you won't lose your cycle if you ran your canister the whole time.

if your canister return is below the waterline, you may want to consider an air stone.

    +1 to the above

Set the filter return line near the surface to get good water movement (to oxygenate the water) or add a airstone.

Check your water parameters daily for a week or so, just to make sure you don't get a small spike, but you should be fine to remove the UGF as long as you keep the 406 running on the tank.

Just a note...while UGFs aren't mainstream anymore, a properly run UGF still does what its supposed to do. There's really no need to replace it unless you prefer to.
