Horizontal or vertical?

Horizontal. I've never seen one mounted vertically!"Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known." Carl Sagan

For a single canister tank, horizontal near the surface on the side glass. For dual canister tanks, the same, and the second spraybar is mounted vertically on the back glass, pointed towards the other filter.125 - big fish - BGK

I have mine set-up like Jaysee has explained. My second canister filter has a spray bar mounted vertically to get some more even flow throughout the tank. The other canister filter has the return just below the surface to oxygenate the tank water.
It seams to work better that way for my tank.If you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.
