  1. Default Just got my 55 gallon up and running...

Waiting for the second filter and decor to come in the mail. I ended up getting a used light, stand, rocks, and heater. Had to cave and get substrate as I didn't want to use used substrate. Trying to do this on a budget, so it will be a slow process to get everything working fully....but, I'm planning to do a fish-in cycle and also transfer some media from one of my healthy tanks to speed up the process, but I'm not sure what to put in my tank yet as I like a lot of fish but I feel they conflict.

I'm a big fan of schooling fish and I've had tetras in the past. Interested in rams, rainbowfish, barbs, and corys but only experienced with having the corys. My wife constantly demands to have colorful fish and a lot of them. Any ideas for what to put in my 55 gallon tank? Interested in what you might suggest.

+1 A fishless cycle will go much faster - then you can add all your fish at once.

I guess not all people can wait for a tank to cycle. Looking at your wish list,
"Interested in rams, rainbowfish, barbs, and corys but only experienced with having the corys."

All of these will do well in a 55 gallon with a descent light and some low light plants (if you can), with water hardness around 8.2 max.
But, not during a tank cycle. Rams and Cories especially will suffer from the ammonia unless your ready to change alot of water daily or every other day depending on your filters which may have some BB in them from another set-up.
If your really going with a fish in cycle, start with a few fish of the schooling variety like barbs (they usually stay in the middle of the tank), and monitor the water for ammonia daily. When the ammonia gets above .25ppm, 30% water change with conditioner if not on well water. You see any light green in that test tube (if using a liquid kit), water change time.
Good luck and go slow with the additions.
Warning; Bulldog Pleco guarding my Sons tank now..

Please remember; every keystroke has a consequence.

I just feel like doing a fish-in cycle. I've done it on all my other tanks and it has worked out well everyone one of those times.

I was on my LFS and decided that I must have a school of silver-tipped tetras, they'll look awesome with my decor and gravel.

The water is generally pretty hard here in Wisconsin but I'm trying a number of things to reduce the hardness, just need to see what works. Making my reconsider rams as I know they are very sensitive to this type of thing.

If your not willing to do a fishless cycle at least put the Rams and Cory's in last.

Just an idea, but since you list barbs in your like list and you wife wants colour, why not go with some schools of different barbs? Theres a fair variety to pick from with some really colourful options. Its an idea I'm playing with for my next tank which will be a 180
By the way a fishless cycle is quicker and lets you add all your stock in one hit

Of course I would put them in last. As I've said, I've done this a bunch of times and I know how to do it pretty well. I know to put the most sensitive fish in last and I know those are probably the most.

    Which barbs are you considering?
