What can of substrate can I use with dwarf cichlids? Can you give recommendations for dwarf cichlids and amount of total fish in the tank.? Can they co-exist with cory's?

I would assume not more than a few fish.

    thanks,

i'd recommend a pair but wouldn't go much more than that. Do a pair of dwarf cichlids and do a schooling dither fish (small upper level fish).

I wouldn't do the cories with the tank size, few things - 1. they like to be in a school, and 6 cories but 2 dwarf cichlids is a crowded bottom in a 20g Long. 2. I have issues with my rams stressing the cories out when they would spawn in my 55. I'd recommend no cories to prevent issues

Would depend on the exact cichlid but most will appreciate sand more than gravel.

i have heard rams like darker substrate. not sure if this is 100% true.
    mine are in aquarium soil.
what i would do is get a pair of rams or albino kribensis with like 10 neon tetra
i hear some people say, "i kept a goldfish in a bowl and it lived for a year."
they don't know how lucky they were and all goldfish live at least 15 years in proper conditions.
that is equal to saying my human lived in his closet for 5 years!

+1 to the above. A pair plus a school of cardinals is what you want, the substrate needs to be sand. Also I think pygmy corries or panda corries would be fine, but not the bigger ones.
