Default Need advice on tank stocking and microrasboras

    0 Not allowed!
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have a 65 gallon tank, soon to be heavily planted. I'm working on the stocking, and I'm going for the 'whole-dang-lot-of-small-fish' look. My current stock is:
5-6 Beckford's pencilfish (never see them all, so I can't tell if I have all 6)
Two dwarf pencils that school with the others.
    One Schwartz cory
    Two Julii cories
    Two salt-and-pepper cories
Two dwarf or pygmy cories, possibly hybrids
Two female bettas (soon to be three)
    Two or three ghost shrimp
One Stonehead Sulawesi goby (2" long, fairly slender, large-ish mouth but peaceful)
Twig catfish (has a sucker mouth, can't eat anybody)
African pipefish (5" long, true freshwater, very friendly)
    One small male orange-throated darter
    Two horn nerites
    One assassain snail
One gold gourami (may be removed if he shows any signs of aggression)

I want at least four more pencilfish and at least eight more dwarf and/or pygmy cories. I'm also planning on a school of neon tetras, 6 or so, and a rubberlip pleco (4" long, and adorable!). A few ottos may end up in there as well, and probably something like two male Endler's livebearers and four females. I want a bunch of small fish who school at least fairly tightly, so I'm considering microrasboras or celestial pearl danios. Any problems with adding CPDs?
Any other schooling nano fish to recommend?
I'm also planning on chucking a bunch of low-quality cherry shrimp in here and letting them breed.

    that's quite the collection.

I suspect these fish might well end up as gourami food or on the darter menu if they venture low. Nano fish are lovely but not with a fish collection like yours.

Too many species. Each of your cory types are a separate species and will not school together. A 65 gal is tall, but only 36 inches wide - with all the fish you want, that will be a very heavily stocked tank.
75 gal - Smudge Spot Cories, Silvertip & Pristella Tetras, Scissortail & Red Tail Rasboras, Pearl Gourami, Black Kuhli Loaches, Whiptail Cats, Wild Caught BNP
Dual 29 gals - Diamond Tetras. Harlequin Rasboras, Bloodfin Tetras
    10 Gal - Mr. Betta's Fishy Paradise

I'm sort of fiddling with it right now, I don't intend to get everything I mentioned, it's just ideas.
@talldutchie, I might get rid of the gourami, especially if it'd eat the others. Darters actually have very small mouths for their size, at least this species. I don't think one can swallow a fish an inch long... Plus, this one's a baby. Barely over an inch long, which leaves plenty of time for any small fish I get to grow to full size before he does.
@gronlaura, the cories actually do school with eachother. Not tightly, but they play together a lot. I might get another Schwartz, but I can see they're happy. I'm also considering maybe another julii or two... I like them.
How tightly do microrasboras school? Or CPDs? If I can get a large-ish school of tightly schooling fish, I'll get rid of the gourami. I kind of like him, though... He's all shiny.
Think the gold gourami could eat a fully grown CPD? Aside from the goldie, most of the fish are small. Since this tank is fairly large, I'm hoping I can keep lots of schooling fish... It's something I've wanted to do for a while.
I hate hearing people say "it's only a $3/$5/$1 fish/shrimp, so it's ok if it dies, I can just get another." It's still an animal! All animals should be treated like they're worth $10,000.

If you want to keep small fish, the goby should go also, they can swallow anything they can fit in their mouth.

I'm in the process of trying to work out exactly what fits in his mouth... He's really cool, so I hope he can't eat the things I want. I might try getting some seafood or something like that and slicing it up into tiny-fish-sized bits to see if he can swallow it. I know he can't eat my smallest pencils, and they're slightly over a half inch long. The goby never really pays attention to them, aside from flicking his tail and being annoyed when they try to eat his speckles.

Ít's up to you. If you want to listen to advice mine would be stop running a fish collection and start running a community tank. If you want to truly enjoy microrasboras then get a long tank like this: http://amzn.com/B004FJ9SDC
Get some wood in there, loads of leaf on the bottom, some tall plants and some java fern on the bottom. Use very soft water, 80% RO/ 20% tap water and get 15-20 of the little guys.

I'm trying to balance community and collection. My aim is to keep a community with variety, and have some of the oddball fish I used to drool over when I couldn't keep them. I forgot to add that I know someone who sells these nice algae-eating freshwater gobies, so they're on my list. I can't remember the species name... S- something, a fairly long word... Not Sulawesi, that's the fat one I have. I don't think it's Stonogobiops, because I'm pretty sure that's a saltwater goby.
I think I'll scratch the microrasboras... They're so tiny, I'm worried that pretty much anything could gobble them. That, and I don't think they'd like our water. I might go for CPDs when I get more plants. And I know I'm getting Endler's livebearers. I love those.

My best advice to you is ------------ to get a bigger tank. Come on! You know you want to!

I do... Can't get more or larger tanks 'till I move out, though, and I'm not old enough. I really want a small tank for micro-micro fish... Plus, maybe a 5-gal or so for a dwarf puffer. I love dwarf puffers. A brackish water tank would be great, too.
I want banjo catfish, too, but they'd eat most or all of my fish. Add that to the list of things I want.
Planning on getting a few more pipefish at some point... I love them.
