  1. Default My DIY Sponge filter

    0 Not allowed!
Hi, in recent events of my "pre filter intakes" on my HOB's in the ten gallon not quite protecting shrimp fry as much as I would like them to, I read up on sponge filters and attempted to make one. Here are photos, and critique is the reason I am posting this. I have not tried it out yet, but it will be hooked to a good aerator.
    supplies:
    plastic water bottle with top
    Airline
    airstone

    Media:
    quilt batting
    some kind of packing foam?

    IMG_8596.jpgIMG_8597.jpgIMG_8598.jpgIMG_8599.jpgIMG_8600.jpg
Process: cut hole in bottle top to make room for airline
poked holes in the bottle with a needle, enlarging them with a nail
    cut bottle into 2 pieces
put airstone with tube into some of the packing foam stuff.
stuffed lower part full with media
put top part of bottle on, put on cap with airline

I didn't use silicon, does anyone think I need to?
Do I have the concept of the sponge filter right?
Questions or comments are appreciated, thanks!

    Personally I see some issues:

    1. You need holes in top and bottom of bottle, a sponge filter uses the air bubbles to pull water in through it and up through the tube
    2. The pillow stuff will clog easy and usually just has to be thrown out - this would ruin your cycle

    Here are some cheap alternatives:

I use this in my 10g RCS tank

Or kensfish has the ATI hydro sponge filters for like $5 each and they work great

The packing foam is closed cell. It won't do anything but make your bottle float.

If you put a tube in the bottle going most of the way down, and dropped the airstone in that, then poked a few holes in the bottle, it would kinda work. Also, lose the cap.

Still not the greatest design IMO. The principal of a sponge filter is air goes through a tube and pulls water up with it. So its kinda like a very low powered air driven pump pulling water up. So you use that suction at the bottom of the tube to pull water through a sponge or some kind of media.

    That make any sense?

Ok, so I should make another hole in the top and bottom, and get a tube?

The thing you linked is exactly what I have, and my shrimp are still getting into the intake.
Thanks for the critique! Keep it coming, that's why I posted the thread

heres a picture of my bottle filter, i have holes in the bottom, and holes in the cap. i cut the bottle in half and just squeezed it together. they stay nice. the bottom has a course sponge and the biomedia was pre seeded from one of my tanks.

the air line isnt really attached just held in. the line comes up threw the sponge, and the media. works great with all my qt purposes or small tanks

.....Urau Joey. Why wasn't that the first resource I turned to?
He mentions ceramic media, what exactly is that, and how can I get some? I have seen the bio rocks at my lfs, made by flourish, but the money you spend on the rocks could be spent on a sponge filter.
@genocidex, what kind of media do you have in yours? I like your design too.
    Thanks! Keep up the critique

I used an cut to fit sponge i had and fluval biomedia. You can get a box of it for 10$ if i remember, its good stuff to have. I think the box can do like 10 of these filters and the sponge i got for free...

Ceramic media is just ceramic. If its unglazed it has massive surface area on a microscopic level, which is what counts. Terra cotta also works very nicely. $2 a pot + some handywork with a hammer and you have more than enough.
