Thanks for the info. I really liked the petco sand. My only concern is cleaning it - how do you see the debris? My two AC110s in the 75 gal do a great job of sucking up the fish poop off my almost white sand and I have almost no vacuuming to do. Hopefully the Renas will do the same in the new tanks. It should be easy to vacuum the entire bottom of a 29 gal to make sure it's clean.

    Default Glowlight Danios at petsmart!

I forgot to post this. I was at petsmart buying cat litter and I always visit with the cats up for adoption and then go browse the fish dept.

OMG - what did they have - Glowlight Danios!!! Just got them in. I would love to not have to have them shipped from TWS/Oregon.

They also just got in Longfin Leopard Danios! Both fish look great. I think I will quarantine 8 longfin leopard danios and 3 neon dwarf rainbows (2 M & 1 F) in the second 29 gal when it's cycled. I was going to add 4 more longfin zebra danio girls to the 75 gal, but I think I will add the leopards instead. They are a really pretty fish. Then they will all go in the 75 gal. Petsmart carries both fish and I will talk to the manager to see if she can get in the rainbow boys and girl. Would love to get the danios and rainbows from the same place so I can quarantine them together.

I have lots of research to do regarding the aquascaping.
I'm very happy that my journal has helped intrigue/inspire you! It's a small payment for everything I have learned from you and your journal :-)

In terms of research, in addition to fishbase.org (which only had information on fish) another website I found very useful was:

    http://fish.mongabay.com/biotope.htm

He has a list of different biotopes which include lists of fish species, but also includes descriptions of the biotopes along with plant species typically found in each. There is also a forum called "the planted tank" that seems to have info about specific biotopes:

    http://www.plantedtank.net

    Have fun! :-)

In my area, it makes a big difference which petsmart you go to. There are a couple where I won't even go into the fish dept, the staff are so uneducated and not willing to listen. This particular store is the only one where I will buy fish and only when a certain staff member is there. She is very good at netting fish - had no problem with netting my longfin zebra danios and they have been very healthy fish. She, another employee and I had a nice conversation about compatibility, cycling and quarantine when I was there.

Adding sand without the dust, using only a 2 liter soda bottle. I think they rinsed it first, then filled the bottle with the wet sand.

Only sand comes out; the dust stays inside the bottle because water must flow into the bottle to make up for the volume of sand that fell out.

    Default Tank stand #1

    0 Not allowed!
Should finish the second stand this weekend. I just have to secure the center braces and the corner leg supports on the last leg and add the top trim piece. Then I am going to paint the entire stand black.

Here is stand #1 being inspected by construction supervisor Otis -

And a use for the stand during filter maintenance, smartly demonstrated by Otis -

Well, he is 16 yrs old and should probably retire. But he likes to be "paws on" when I'm building something!
