I use #8, 2-1/2 inch Spax stainless steel wood-to-wood screws, 45 screws per box. I get them at Menard's. The screws cost as much as the wood! You don't have to use SS - I do because they won't rust. Wood cost for the 29 gal stand - $20.52, screws $22.00 and I need a few more! There will be 112 screws in this stand.

I haven't done any more work on the stand as it's been so hot here (Slaphppy7, I can see your "you don't know what hot is" expression!). Yesterday is was 97, today and tomorrow to be even hotter. I need to hand cut the corner leg supports and don't want to do it in the house. This weekend should be much cooler and I can hopefully finish the stand (except for paint).

If anyone is interested in building this stand and would like the cut lengths for the wood, let me know your exact tank size and the height of the tank (measure from the bottom of the tank to the floor). Also, whether you are using a plywood top and styrofoam or just stryofoam (I would need the thickness measurement of each). You should use styrofoam between the stand and the tank to prevent pressure on the bottom glass from any imperfections or unevenness in the wood. You don't have to use the plywood top, as the tank frame is supported entirely by the 2x6 rectangle.
Thanks for the info on the wood and screws...not sure I'm gonna get SS, they cost twice as much as regular screws, and I'm gonna paint the stand and screwheads, so hopefully not much rust issue...I see why you'd want them, though.

I don't EVEN want to hear any whining about your little heat wave you've got going on up there...you imagined my expression well...lol, jk

I knew nothing about the styrofoam up top, so I am going to get back with you on that...one question though...you say the tank is only supported by the rectangle...what about the crossmembers up top?...they are there for front/back stability only?...I don't see why you could not use them as support under the tank also, after you've leveled and fastened the top rectangle, and added the 8 leg supports?

You do not want the center braces to touch the tank or the plywood top, if you add one. The tank is completely supported only by the frame. You need only to support the frame. The bottom glass does not touch the top of the stand, as it is slightly recessed. Only the bottom frame touches the stand. Look at the metal stands that are available - no top on them. The cross-members are only to stabilize and add strength to the stand, not to support anything. That is why they are recessed 1/4 inch below the top. If the cross-member piece was uneven or attached too high, it could put pressure on the bottom glass and crack it.

I'm not using a top, only the 3/4 inch styrofoam between the top rectangle and my tank. It will be hidden when I finish the stand. My 75 gal sits on a shelf, so it also has the 3/4 inch styrofoam between the stand shelf and the tank. Styrofoam is less than $2 for a 2 x 8 piece at Menard's.

If your floor is level, they should all be pretty much the same. Talk to your Home Depot person - they should be able to do accurate cuts. It's better if they are a hair long, but they can't be short. You can always use a very coarse grit sand paper to shorten them a bit, if needed.
Got it -- thanks. I have a neighbor who is far more knowledgeable than me at wood working, perhaps I will enlist his help and his tools. Your explanations are as clear as water (well, at least as water from a well-filtered tank ;-) and make it seem easy to those of us who are woodworking challenged!

There's lots of different kinds of styrofoam...could you post a link to the type you use?

Just realized I have to make a correction to the screw size that I used for my stand. They are #10 2-1/2 inch stainless steel screws, not #8.

    I have a question -

When I have the first 29 gal ready to go, with biomax that has seeded in my 75 gal (filtration for the 29 gal will be a Rena XP-M canister, for up to 75 gal), how will I know if there is enough BB for the 12 glowlight danios and the 2 BNPs? Before stocking, should I add pure ammonia and see how long it takes for the BB to convert it to nitrates - should be within 24 hrs, right? How many ppm of ammonia would you raise it to in a 29 gal?

I just ordered my 2 Rena XP-Ms for the 29 gals. Great price at Drs Foster/Smith with free shipping, an online sale price only, so they couldn't tell me how long they would be on sale. Figured I'd better get them now.
