when i first got my 20 gallon tank it was my brothers.
he worked at a pet store and thought he knew how to keep fish.
he made this tank over stocked, it was barley cycled and the fish were aggressive towards each other.
back than i didn't know any of this.
he wanted to get live plants in this tank.
the gravel was dark blue. he did "research" and dumped this aquarium soil over the blue gravel.
then he just got some plants and planted them.
one type of plant in there is a Amazon sword, and the other one idk.
then i did research after 2 rams passing away and took control of the tank.
but the plants i didn't do any research and winged it.
they have been alive and well since. sometimes a few leaves would die.
are the live plants really alive and well.
i hear some people add stuff for plants.
do i need to do this?
i hear some people say, "i kept a goldfish in a bowl and it lived for a year."
they don't know how lucky they were and all goldfish live at least 15 years in proper conditions.
that is equal to saying my human lived in his closet for 5 years!

If you got aquarium soil on top then the best thing is not to disturb it.

I've seen many people use soil for their plants - sounds like they are doing well!

I am currently using sand and "ground cover" type material. It is working well. Root tabs work also. They will fertilize your plants. Technically the fish waste should do that anyway. Personal preference and what works for some isn't for others. Happy Planting :)

Plants also need lots of light. be sure to keep shed leaves cleaned out of tank.

You will know if something is wrong because the plants colors will fade, look wilted and/or lose leaves just like any other dying plant. Cool thing about some aquatic plants is that even if they're not rooting well for some reason they can often just grow as free floaters.
