    And here's an oto.

All the fish seem much more at ease in this tank compared to the last one. They are much braver and spend less time hiding. I'm not sure if this might have something to do with the fact that they spent nearly a month in a bare holding tank so might have acclimatised to that environment somewhat. The sudden change back to planted cover has made them comparatively far more relaxed now. Perhaps...

    Quick update.

I went to my LFS tonight to see if I could pick up 10 false penguin tetra. They only had six or seven specimens so I ordered a batch of 20 - they will place an order from their supplier next week. Hopefully they will arrive in the next two or three weeks and I can collect them (10 at a time a week apart is the plan). I'm holding off on the dwarf cichlid for now and will do some more thinking before I commit to ordering a pair (mainly due to my hard water issues).

Whilst I was there I couldn't help picking up a few plants. I got a couple of (slightly ropy-looking) Ludwigia gladulosa, and a pot of Ludwigia arcuata which I hope will do well.

The alternanthera reineckii has really taken umbridge at being moved into this tank. I'm not really sure why as the substrate and water parameters are identical. Anyway...it started melting really badly and most of the plantlets lost all or most of their leaves. I've torn most of them out (giving a few stern warnings to the remaining few).

First...here's a couple of photos of the lovely big fat peppered cory.

An unusual shot showing the anatomy of the gill. Weird!

And an updated FTS. I've managed to cut and hinge the outflow pipe so that I can have my double spray-bar along the back wall. It now, very gently, blows from the back to the front. It's amazing how much flow is reduced by doubling the length! I'm pleased with this as the plants were all blowing around a bit too much before.

I've had a minor outbreak of BBA so I've started dosing 10ml of EasyLife EasyCarbo each day to try to stop this progressing. Other than that, all looks well. There is far more algae and tasty bits in this tank for the 9 otos I have. I might go back to the LFS and pick a few more up. I have nine now so I might get another 11 for a proper little school of them. They are my secret stars of the tank and do an excellent job keeping the leaves free of algae.

I bought some extra assassin snails from another forum and they arrived in the post yesterday. This bumps the adult numbers up to seven so I'm hoping they start to control the pesky pond snails in the tank. They're nibbling my frogbit at the moment which is a bit annoying.

I second that, anytime newcomers have questions about planted tanks I refer them to your thread or Kevin's.

You are the Queen of planted tanks Firefly.

What kind of ferts do you use?

Nothing at the moment. I wanted to see how low tech I can keep this one. I've started dosing 10ml of EasyCarbo each day to combat a small outbreak of BBA, but no ferts as yet. The ADA substrate will be loaded with it for many months yet. My shrimp tank is still very fertile nearly a year on so I'm hoping I get a similar run from this one.

I do have EasyLife ProFito on hand if it does start looking drab. I've also used Tropica and Sera fertilisers with great success. None seem to be better than the others. I was happy with all of them (I just buy the ones on offer)

Had a go with the video function on my elderly compact camera the other night. Not the highest quality but it does the job. The cherry barbs were particularly excitable when I filmed this.

    Feedback/positive/negative, all welcome. Cheers.

I got a call from my LFS today saying they got more penguin tetra in (that was quick!) so I'll probably add a group fo 10 to start off a new school tomorrow.

Yay! I think the penquins will realy make your tank pop, IMO. It certainly does not need much more, great video.
