How do you tell if you're dosing too much ferts other than algae growth? O.o I have root tabs for all my plants and I also dose ferts once a week. Suddenly brown algae is showing up. Should I cut the dosing to once every 2 weeks and see how things go?

I think if its brown algae, its diatoms, usually found in newer tanks or caused by high silicas

What ferts are you using. I think you would have green algae if it was a fert problem

Brown algae is also caused by excessive nitrates...

    Have you tested by chance?

Yes and things were normal, around 20ppm. I just did a big wc though and moved around a lot of plants. Next time I do a wc I have to rinse out my filters in tank water. They're getting a little mucky. Hopefully the algae is nothing. I'll decrease my ferts and wait until the algae is gone until I restart.
