So, I really really have my heart set on having a betta fish.

I know they can adjust to and be happy in a wide range of water values, but I'm worried that my water might be a little too far out for even a hardy healthy betta. The pH is 8.2 and the hardness is skyscraper-high (394ppm KH and 502ppm GH).

Is there anything reasonable I can do? A RO unit is not already way beyond my already-blown meager budget, but it feels rather ridiculous for a single 5 gal tank with plenty of plants in it. (And I have to be slow to change water parameters, thanks to the crypts in there.)

Would making a mix of tap and DI water work? Or how about adding IAL to the tank? The only way I'd be making huge, frequent water changes would be if I got a very young betta.

Why not just buy the water? Some grocery stores have ro dispensers right there, and you can buy the bottle and refill as required. I used to do that for my reef tank until I decided I needed to go DI as well...and that was for a 50 gal tank/5 gal weekly water changes. A 5 gal betta you should be able to buy a 5 gal bottle water fairly cheaply...which would likely last you a month. If not at a local grocery store, then at a lfs or water depot place.

Keep the betta tank under 10g and buying the water wouldnt be too bad. Or a thought, buy distilled water and cut it with some tap to give it some minerals back? Idk how well that would work just a thought. But even "spring" water could work just go cheap lol

sheamurai--I don't want to go pure DI water because of the plants, and eventually the snails. I'm not looking for a huge change here. It's just .2pH higher than what I'm comfortable with.

genocidex-Cutting DI with tap was one of the things I've been thinking of. I need some minerals and higher pH for the plants and when I add snails. I think the pH is what worries me the most--it's just a smidge higher than I'm comfortable with for a betta.

Also, I still have my notes on water quality from the last time I had fish in this tank... And the water hardness is literally double what it was then, and it was considered 'very hard' then!

I wasn't suggesting you go DI, but straight RO...thats what stores generally sell...

I personally wouldn't want to go cutting your water...then your fish would be subject to the slight variations you might get when you mix it. Best to either stay straight tap, or straight new.

Also, your lfs should have similar water to yours, unless its far away. Why not ask what their levels are - perhaps your betta will already be used to your water. The cups won't be on their filtration system so they may be using straight tap water for the bettas.

I think I've only seen basic filtered and DI water around here. I'll need to look more.

I do buy filtered water for drinking, because the tap is so bad. It's just so hard lifting those bottles onto the cooler base when they're full! I'm short and don't have a lot of upper body strength.for once my legs have lifted them as high as that can go. (And for controlling the bottles as they're flipped onto the stand.)

Idk how the betta would adapt to the slightly higher ph, the tds i think is the main problem some people have. Ph can be an indicator of tds...

About your tank doubling its hardness, you probably fell victim to something similar to salt creep (i think thats what its called). Its a salt water term. Basically the water evaporates and leaves minerals behind, when you replace that water with hard water you are just adding more minerals. Thats what i think caused that.

+1 to asking ur lfs about their water... I doubt the .2 ph would kill the the betta any ways lol

My tank didn't double in hardness--it's been sitting dry for several years. My tap water doubled in hardness.

And unfortunately, I don't have a lfs that I trust. :( The one store within reasonable driving distance I liked closed a year or two ago.

Yeah, we're a big enough metro area. You'd think there'd be a wealth of good fish stores. One is hard to get to, teeny-tiny, and specializes in marine aquariums. The other is pretty close, but their betta section is worse than the Pet-chains. :(
