Very happy with the 7 I have, will likely buy more as well- might bump up the bunch to 15 -16.

Unfortunate the OP's thread will end up being locked as a result of a sidelined topic.

What about Emperor tetras? they are neat.

I realy like Emperor tetras too, I keep two of the species, the regular and the Rainbow. They don't always school but are aptly named.

Although many member's have had good luck with Serpae's, most cases have shown them as being nippy even when kept in larger groups.

Plus we all foget this is not madagascariensis first Rodeo, he knows fish.

I'm so glad you said that steeler. He'll figure out what works best for him.
When in doubt, do a water change.

depending on the size of the tank maybe you can do a school or loaches and a school of tetras? i for one am a fan of torquios danios, cherry barbs, ember tetras, and (i know you said no but) neons XD. any ways..... your water seems neutral, so i see no big problems with fish adapting.

People have different stories when it comes to Serpaes. I am one of the positives.

I started out with 9 in a 55 and had no problems at all. They are my best schoolers in fact.

Now I have 14 in my 130g, and would really like to have more.

I will note that when I first introduced my angels I had a couple days of a little nipping, but that has completely stopped. My Angels lovely fins will attest to that.
    130g: 7 Angelfish, 1 Bolivian, 12 Neon Tetras, 14 Serpae Tetras, 9 Kuhli Loaches, 1 Otocinslus, 1 Corydora ? Ghost Shrimp
I've noticed that people HATE it when you point out how stupid they are, so now I try to do it politely.

if I were restocking a whole tank, I would have considered loaches. thing is that i only want to replace my white clouds which have started dying off due to age.
I was considering ember tetras but with bolivian rams in the tank i thought that they might be too fragile for whatever aggression the rams might dish out.

i didnt know anything else about the tank. maybe consider some hatchets? they will stay well away from the rams at the top of the tank. you shouldnt ever have a problem with them

As long as you buy full grown Embers you would be okay but most places sell them at 1/2' or smaller than they would just become a snack for your Bolivian.

thanks for all suggestions so far. my 7 bolivians are in fact ridiculously peaceful for a cichlid. most of the time I count them as a 3rd schooling species. my concern is that they do want to breed occasionally
and they have no inhibitions about demonstrating their need for privacy. I'm not scared of them eating the embers. they leave even endler guppy fry be.
    so far I really like
    - herlequin rasboras
    - blue tetra
    -rummynose
    -emperor
also like serpae and ember, bút just don't want to take the risk that comes with both of these species.
