i think its an apisto.... the shape is dead on to the panda dwarf.... but apistos have a habit of being aggressive, they are all unique tho

Apistos are the pushovers of the cichlids, though. Much less aggressive than most others. Mine were very peaceful, actually, even for cichlids.

I think it's a pelmatochromis or a close relative. Maybe a p. buettikoferi or a nigrofasciata. It's got the yellow body with reddish scale outline, purple dorsal with yellow spangles, red anal fin with yellow spangles and reddish lines on the cheeks. It also has the black spot on the gill cover that yours has and apistos don't. The only difference is that pictures I have found seem to show more spots on their flanks than yours, but there also is lots of variation. They also are supposed to be fairly nonaggressive, and that fits your description.

And adult pelmatochromis is significantly bigger than an apisto. I think it still comes down to size and I also think that OP should get involved in this discussion.

It's not an apisto. Even without being able to tell exactly how big it is, it is safe to guess that fish is larger than an apisto. Plus, the body is not torpedo shaped. I think old world cichlid is a more reasonable guess. Madagascar is along the right line.

I have no idea but it doesn't look right to me either. His picture does not look to me as the picture Greentoads put up of the apisto. In the authors photo, his fish looks too heavily bodied and too large for an apisto but then since he has not come back to answer any of the questions regarding size, might as well wait for more info.
