  1. Default Just rescued some goldfish

Hi, i just rescued 3 goldfish from a stinky small bowl where you hardly could see them ,they were swimming in their own waste .So I got a 10 gal tank and start reading about this fish thing .It s been a week I set up everything, i guess now the tank is cycling, fish is very active , look happy, playing with the plants.
Ok my question is ,can i avoid buying an amonium test only doing water changes every 2 days?Im not cheap but theese are expenses not in my plans.I put enzyme thing ,fish is very hardy, they all survived in that bowl for 3 months. Btw why my pict is upsidedown?

That tank can't be cycled so quickly...and now that you've added fish, which was kind of you in trying to save them, you will have to cycle with them or re-home them and do a fishless cycle...there are stickies in the beginner's section on both ways of cycling.

I would buy an API Master Test kit if i were you, you will need it to cycle properly. You also need a good water conditioner, such as Prime. And a good filter, one that will clean twice that tank size.

Also note that goldfish get huge and will outgrow that 10 gallon very quickly.

You are welcome...some symptoms of the fish you may encounter if there is ammonia in your tank are:

    Lethargy
    Loss of appetite
Hovering at the bottom of the tank (especially for surface dwelling fish)
    Gasping at the surface
    Inflamed gills
Red streaks or inflammation in the gills
    Inflamed eyes or anus

Please read thoroughly the article on cycling with fish located here: http://www.aquaticcommunity.com/aqua...ad.php?t=36492

You will need that test kit to do the cycle properly, it is a good investment, and you can use it many many times...

Cycling with fish is a long process, so for your newly rescued fish' sake, please be patient....post back here if you need help, someone will get back to you.

Make sure you also understand what cycling is for. Many beginners are told how to Cycle but have no idea what they are accomplishing. It's a process of accumulating beneficial bacteria in the tank that will help metabolize certain fish wastes. It was very kind of you to rescue those goldfish, and 10 gallons of relatively clean water is surely much better than a bowl, but the sad news is that even in the 10 gallon they will not be able to live forever. The goldfish in your picture look like commons or comets and will reach 12 inches plus with enough space

Thank so much everybody, for the links and everything, I ll keep an eye on them ,I am beginning to learn their habits and if I see something weired I ll buy this API test .What I do now, I test water with theese stripes I have ,and do water changes every other day .I ,ve never had fish tank before looks like I,m getting myself into a new hobby ,but it s a lot lo learn which is ok i don.t mind .
I really hope my fish don' t grow that big but if will grow i consider getting a new tank ...we,ll see.
I went to pet shop ,check new fish ,some gorgeous ones ,I google about it and none match my small tank so i ll get a bigger tank one day someday after I get some fish skills .

    Thankyou.
I had a bad feeling the whole morning and at 12 sharp i was at pet shop to buy amonia test. As I was worried my tank is in danger zone ,test is green dark .I change 25% water , tested again ,the green slightly lighter but still above 4 .0
This lesson to be learned,i ll never cycle with fish inside ,too much stress.
Now i sit and pray not to loose my little heroes,I hope they make it.They are crying for food but sorry no food for today some starvation wown' t hurt but amonia sure does.
