If you can't have a clown fish your tank, maybe you should have one on the forum. Keep up the research - Cliff

Default protein skimmer or chemical filtration?

i am asking this because the biocube 14 only has room for one of the two. i plan on having coral in the tank if that changes anything

I have a 50gal tank and do not run a skimmer. Depending on what you mean by chemical filtration, I would go with that.
I'm a big fan these days of chemi-pur elite, sea gel, poly filter. I prefer chemipure over purigen...

Right now I run plain carbon, chemipure elite, and some poly filter.
Once my tank has bounced back 100% from the heater malfunction, the poly filter will get the boot and a regular sponge will be back in there.

I would go with a skimmer if I had to choose between the two, but that is my personal preference.

A skimmer will help to maintain higher oxygen levels in the water and will be more effective in helping with nitrate reduction.
If you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.

No, a properly sized skimmer will not removed needed trace elements.

I'm not a big fan of plan old carbon. I always prefer products like chemi-pure over average quality carbon.
