  1. Default Water Temp Tolerance

I have a 36 gallon Tall tank cycling right now and want to go with Tetras and perhaps some danios (for the top swimmers). However, where the tank resides in the house, the AC keeps the tank at a solid 70 degrees F. Will my tetras adapt or should I put a heater in? All the specs I've read suggest 75 degree + for most tetras.

Def should have a heater. Bad thing about having ac is that the two will fight each other and use more electricity. Ideally I'd up the ac a little and lower the tank temp are hair to find a happy medium. I keep my tanks at 78-80 with my ac at 72 without too much of a problem. Just keep lids on the tanks to hold the heat in

as cold blooded animals, temperature is more important to the fish than it is to us. i certainly would get a heater or else choose fish that enjoy cooler temperatures. i have heard that bloodfin tetras will tolerate temperatures to approx. 18 degrees celsius

Tetras for sure need a heater. I keep my tank at 76 f. Danios CAN do without the heater but I think they do better with it. BTW I have tetras and white clouds.

+ 1 to madagascariensis for always knowing his fish. Bloodfins are one of the few Characins that can take lower temps.

Thanks for the input. I dropped a 50w I had laying around to heat up the tank a little during the cycling. I'll grab a bigger heater towards the end of the cycling for a more consistent temp.

Tank is sitting at 74-76 F consistently with the 50w kicking in only once in a while. So, I think I have the climate control managed primarily by the room temp.

I have a bunch of deco to do, but the tank has been cycling for 2 weeks now and water tests are already looking good. Not going to jump the gun and add fish. Probably wait 2 more weeks just to be sure the water conditions don't suddenly change on me after its too late.

I generally recommend you place a heater where the filter is so more water touches it. As for temperature, you have great answers, you need 75+ degrees generally. The danio wont care from 68-85 degrees but almost all tetra will.

The heater floated over the the right side of the tank when the holders came loose. Usually sits at the bottom in the middle since its submersible. I'll be adding another filter soon anyways so in the middle it'll get plenty of exposure.

I'm aiming at a consistent 76 degree temp so that a 200w heater can easily compensate during the winter months when the downstairs tends to get quite cold. :)

It'll be a tetra exclusive tank with the exception of the Oto cats so I think my tank temps are going to be ok now.

Putting a second filter in to the tank today. Tank still hasn't cycled yet. But it's only been 3 weeks at low temps. 74 degrees average. I finally managed to get it up to 80 for BB growth with a second 50w I found laying around.

Decided on 15 Neons, 15 Bloodfins and 6 Oto Cats.
