my buddie has a 120 gallon african cichlid tank mostly mbuna and malawi all juvenile(23 fish total). he has lost 4 fish in about two weeks. symptoms are: loss of apetite, hiding all the time, then death. but recently i sawone of his fish just die out of no where all of a sudden the fish just started spinning and looping around all slow and trippy like and then died. i told him i would find out whats going on. please help.

has he tested for ammonia/nitrate? we will need some more info to best diagnose. if I was him, I would start doing large water changes.

ammonia/nitrite/nitrate figures are the least but with mbuna I think GH and PH are also interesting. Also some background of any changes the last few motnhs. Filtration and maintenance routine. Any recent chemical use in the vicinity? Painting, any aerosol?

7 times out of 10 events like this are owner caused.

I'll add...a "mostly mbuna" tank is unlikely to work, in my experience. Give us a list of the tankmates, please.

ie seen plenty of mbuna peacock mixed tanks thrive. when i say mostly mbuna i mean all the fish are mbuna exept for 1 peacok and 1 tropheus moori the gh and ph are perfect and there is zero aggression dispite the assumption that just because you mix mbuna with peacocks or tropheus moori youre gonna have problems. the problems he is having are clearly not from the mix of fish he picked its obviously something chemical im not writing an obscene stock list for his tank its just unessecary.
