I have always really loved Black Rubies...just one of those fish Ive always meant to keep but never got around to doing so. I am afraid they would get lost in the reds/browns of my crypt garden. The pentazonas would really appeal to my SOs love of Tiger barbs and they may stand out a bit more in the scape. As they only grow to 2" I would have a large group of them of course. I would also be willing to have some floating plants to shade the tank and I am sure my stems will frequently get out of hand before a trim so they will have some shade from the lighting.

Working around say 18 Pentazonas what would you all suggest for the rest. I do want a bottom dwelling species and a "star" fish.

Thanks for the awesome input it is really helping

I was going to say; with the way you can plant a tank, lighting would not be a problem with any species.

Still open to unusual species or atleast those not seen everyday at say petsmart or other large box pet shops.

There will be some areas unplanted, probably not a ton of unplanted landscape though. I have also considered leaf litter but am not 100% on the idea yet. The substrate will be about an inch of organic soil topped with a 2" mix of pool filter sand and small gravel.

Well, for midwater I'm sticking to http://www.aquaticcommunity.com/aqua...2814&p=1159697 which I think is pretty original.

For the bottom, can you get hara? Some lovely bottomw dwellers in that family.

Just a couple of more smaller peaceful barbs to suggest, Puntius rhomboocellatus and Pethia bandula.

I agree...Paradise fish really do need to make a comeback especially the standard colored ones, the males are just stunning. I hope it winds up being a very active and stunning setup
