Help stock my 50!
I am planning a high tech planted with my 50G seaclear(36x15x21). Im going dirt substrate capped by a mix of PFsand and gravel. I have a really nice branchy manzanita stump and seriyu stone for it. Lighting is 2x39watt HOT5 and I will be running pressurized CO2. Filtration will be a Fluval 306 and maybe a random HOB. Plant life I know I want Crypts...will probably turn this into a crypt garden with a backdrop of stems.
Going with that I have considered an asian biotope...however I am having some pretty bad brain flatulence in terms of coming up with a stock plan. I also dont want all of the fish to be extremely common. Any help?3x75 gallons|2x55 gallons|2x50 gallons|3x40 gallons|1x29 gallon|1x10 gallon

What is common to you? Imo in such a setup smaller species work best, less distraction from the scape. Are you in hard or soft water?

Without know water conditions this would be my idea, large school of a small rasbora, maybe a gourami
Personally I perfer the south american fish.
If you were open to that, I'd say a pair of bolivians (they aren't flashy so they won't take away from the aquascape), 2 BN plecos, School of marbeled hatchets, and a school of rummeynose tetra.
Honestly I have no idea about the asian biotope though

Hey there man, I do like an blank slate for stocking.
Even though they are very common, its tough to beat the attractiveness of 12-15 Neon Tetras in a planted tank.
Also Corydoras seem to thrive in this set up and having 4-6 sterbai cories or tri-lineus cories have been nice.
If you wanted to find something other than the neons, I find the Brilliant Rasboras look very nice, especially paired with some deep red cherry barbs.
if you wanted to entertain the idea of doing a large tank with larger schools of smaller fish, you could go with a handful of Galaxy Rasboras which stay very small and picking out some different shrimp species like the pumpkin orange shrimp, the yellow shrimp and blue shrimp.
If you prefer some larger fish, then some pearl gouramis or killifish (gonden wonder or guentheri) are fine choices.
Personally, I think that having a planted tank with a ton of small species could be a fun experiment but could also be an epic failure.
Google "microrasbora" and you can see a large variety of fish that never make it over an inch long.
for 50 gallons, I would say:
20 Galaxy Rasbora
20 Rasbora Erythromicron
14 Neon Tetras
10 Orange Sakura Shrimp (or Pumpkin Shrimp)
10 Blue Velvet Shrimp (or blue Jelly)
10 Yellow neo Shrimp
4 Corydoras Trilineus
Or an different set up:
12 Brilliant Rasbora (AKA Red tail Rasbora)
6 Praecox Rainbow Fish
8 Cherry Barbs
1 Golden Gourami
6 Sterbai Cory
1 Gold Nugget Pleco

Brain flatulence huh? I hate when that happens, especially in public!

Botia Striata (AKA Zebra Loach) would not work in a 36 inch tank. I have 5 in my 48x12 and I can conclude that if they were all in a 36 inch tank(Unless the whole tank was based around them and nothing else) they would be unhappy.
There are many gouramis that are uncommon and small enough for a 50 gallon such as the sparkling gourami, croaking gourami, chocolate gourami, and more.
Also, a small, carnivorous pleco would look nice in a planted tank.

I'm wondering now, will this be an aquascape or a well planted tank?

All of my other tanks are CA/SA setups so I am firm on an asian tank. Ive got a "micro fish" 20G, so would prefer something a bit larger. I do like the idea of killies, off beat gourami, barbs and loaches. The tank will be densely planted with a strong hardscape if that makes sense. With this info keep the suggestions flowing!
And yes chronic brain flatulence is a problem of mine lol3x75 gallons|2x55 gallons|2x50 gallons|3x40 gallons|1x29 gallon|1x10 gallon
