To answer the original question now that you understand the best stocking, in my tanks where I want sand and live plants I put down a one inch layer of EcoComplete and top that with a one inch layer of sand. People will tell you that the sand will sift down into the Eco and perhaps it will over many years, but that has not been a problem in my tanks at all.

I use flourite black sand. It is great for both plants and cories.
