    How is he doing now?

IDK - is it possible he is nearing the end of his life? Does he look bloated? I'm still trying to figure out the ammonia in your tank and where it's coming from - do his gills look red?

He doesn't look any different than usual? So he was normal when you left work yesterday and you found him laying down this morning?

You haven't introduced anything new into his tank at all?

What temp do you keep his tank? Do you keep a thermometer in there? That wouldn't have anything to do with ammonia but I'm just trying to r/o causes of his stress.

Nothing changed in the routine at all, and nothing new added to tank in the last two weeks (two weeks ago I added a moss ball). He was perfectly normal when I left last night.

On the theory that this is ammonia/nitrate stress, I added 0.5 ml of Seachem Prime to the tank about two hours ago, turned out the light and covered the tank, both to give him a quiet environment and so I don't stress out watching him.

I peeked in, and he's still on the bottom. He's breathing *really* hard (about 2x/second). It's awful to watch.

I feel bad - did at least the ammonia come down with your water change? It might help to change it again before you leave work.

What is the water temp? I don't believe you answered that.

    Water temp is 76.

I just retested the water. Ammonia went UP: it's now 0.25. I just did a 2 gallon change.

I have Finquel on hand for euthanization. What's a reasonable time frame? I want to give him time to recover if he's going to, but don't want him to suffer unnecessarily if he's not going to.

I'm not working Friday, so I'm thinking if he's not improved by tomorrow, put him down then.

Damn. By end of the day, he was gray all over, and when gently poked, could only move his pec fins. His back was arched and he looked paralyzed. A co-worker with a fair amount of aquarium experience had no ideas on what caused it, but concurred that hopes of recovery were pretty nil.

I euthanized him in Finquel. Fast and peaceful.

    RIP little guy.

Looks like endured he some sort of major organ failure...in the photo you posted he definitely had a bloated, gray belly. Looks like dropsy, which is just the name for some unexplained catastrophic internal event. You were probably getting wonky water levels because he was in the process of dying.

I'm so sorry. Please know this wasn't anything you did, it happens sometimes. Usually with an illness caused by food or tank parameters you have some warning, especially with bettas. Dropsy can be fast or slow, fortunately it went pretty fast for Mooch. I just experienced this with one of my favorite bettas, Sassy. No symptoms and then pineconing and death. You did the right thing by euthanizing him...the arched back and paralysis probably was just miserable for him. Swim in peace, little fella.

My advice: slow down, think, and be willing to learn. Then you'll be fine, no matter what.

    :( Poor little guy

Sorry to hear the news - I searched for your thread as soon as I got on my computer this morning. That's upsettting but as Bethy pointed out, sometimes a fish can have internal issues - you did what you could.

Thanks, everyone. I'm still sad, but already thinking, "hey, now I can make all those changes in the tank decor I'd wanted!" I've got ammonia to keep the tank cycling until I'm ready for another.

Everyone at work is sad. He was a very popular little guy.
