Ask someone what their plans are with a fish tank when they grab one of the small little ones that are apart of a kit?

Such as, asking what their plans are?

What they plan on putting in there?

How long they want to keep it?

Are they willing to cycle properly and test every/other day?

Seeing someone grab a small plastic tank and a plant made me wonder all of this and want to ask, but i felt like i'd be stepping out of my lane.

No. It would be pointless at best and more likely an upsetting confrontation which would get you removed from the shop. 95% of the fishkeepers see them as disposable moving decorations it seems

I was thinking more along the lines of advice.

Giving advice is useless unless someone is ready to accept it. But yes, I do certainly recognize the feeling.

I only did this once at a local garden center where a person was purchasing some small koi for their pond and the attendant stated to float the fish in the bag for about an hour before releasing into the pond. Well, it was about 90 out that morning... knowing that would "cook" the fish I waited until the employee moved on and and gave the customer the correct advise which they thankfully seemed to appreciate.
