No not very common, usually a 40gal breeder is the common "medium" tank. A breeder is deeper and not as tall.

Also you may be able to get ahold of 30gal breeders down there. I believe those are longer versions of the 29gal.
    FW: 1 45gal, 1 40gal, 3 10gal, 3 30gal all community tanks of different species
    Sw: 1 55gal, 1 30gal show, 1 29gal show, 1 20gal and 2 10's

Those that mentioned the 18" wide are spot on. Trying to decorate a 55 is a pain. Even the placement of driftwood is difficult. I have 3 and hate trying to do anything with them because of that. I also agree with Cliff that way too many of us have just wasted our money on small tanks + small filters + small heaters that are now all crammed away in boxes or been given away.

Another thing to consider is not to get clown puke gravel and waste even more money on fake decorations. That's another money grabber we end up hating and eliminating. Half those goofy decorations that cost too much money are death traps for our fish. Keep it natural. Spend your money on driftwood that the fish like and doesn't kill them.

^^ I'm sold, my next tank, regardless of size, will be at least 18" wide

I don't know, I'm kind of fond of clown puke gravel!

Actually, I have a feeling that will be one of the hardest things for me - to choose how to decorate the tank. Although I appreciate the work that goes into the planted tanks, I know that is not something I would want. I'll have to figure out how to balance something healthy for the fish with something that does not remind me of the lakes and rivers around here. How do I get some color going without the plastic look... All things that will take time, so I am saving all the FTS that appeal to my eye for inspiration. (Think maybe it's the rift lake tanks that I like the most so far and would fit in best with our hard alkaline water.)

My first tank was a 30 something gallon semi hex, nice tank- wish I never gave it away. I still have my 2nd tank which is a 55- agreed, it's a pain to gussy up. I now have my 150g and I am in love with it-also agree with the 18" being a breeze. I have a 40g breeder on the back porch, but my girl will choke me if I bring it inside (if it makes it thru the door.....well, we all know what's going to happen, lol). I have built a 6g and a 12g for the kids from glass- good for them but I have no interest in anything smaller than 20 gallons. I would LOVE to trade the 55 for a 75, that might be a future plan, shhhhhh, don't tell my girlfriend!
When in d0ubt read it until it makes sense, then read it again!
