Thread: Resistant Ich?
05-30-2013, 01:00 PM #1
I am in the very last two days of treating for ich with API's Super Ich Cure. tomorrow is the day I am to stop the medicine, do the 25% water change and insert the carbon again. Thing is, my fish are STILL just covered in ich. Small salt like white spots..... it does not seem to be going away. I have been treating at full strength as well, as per package directions. Had ich once over a year ago and by this time in treatment, the spots are gone.
What shall I do? Oh, I should mention that this med is AFTER I tried the salt and raise temp cure, which did NOT work either. Right now the temp is 82 f.
At my wits end.......

Perhaps try a different med - the ich will kill your fish - it will progress if you stop treatment altogether. I used Kordon 100% natural ich attack - it worked fine for me.
I used meds for a few weeks even after I saw no more spots - the key is to get rid of the spots and then stop - but you've been through this. I assume the ich came from a new fish?
Another thing is its not advisable to increase the temp of your tank AND use meds - both reduce available oxygen in the water. If your fish start showing signs of stress, I would start by reducing the temp to what you normally keep it at and I would try another med.

when you switch to the different medication, make certain you do a couple large water changes first to get rid of the current medication in the tank.
I'm curious - when you used salt and or heat before, how long did you try this treatment? The key is to stay the course a full 7 days after you see the last spot.
I've had ich in my tank twice and I know how difficult it is to deal with. Heat (up to 86 degrees) worked for me but it was a long course of treatment.
Good luck. Hope you have success.

I did the salt and higher temp for two weeks. My fish were so stressed at that point and the ich was only worse. So tried the API (malachite green stuff). This was this PAST week. so almost a week of that. Anyways, got the Jungle Labs All in one treatment. Says it is extremely effective. It is also extremely strong. My fish are so stressed. Have already lost one....... And yes, did 80% water change and put the charcoal in for 6 hours, now have just put in new med. This one you use for 5 days. (6 actually) and does not turn water green.
What do I have to loose at this point except a tank full of platys and tetras......Allergic to all things furry.

so sorry you're having such a hard time. Ich is so horrible to deal with.
salt and heat together can be hard on the fish. I might have just gone for the heat. For future reference (and I hope you don't need it) this is what worked for my tank: 86F for as long as it takes to get rid of the spots then another 7 days to kill the eggs (so to speak) that dropped off. Lower the water level and add a bubbler during the heat treatment and change water every 2 - 3 days then vac the heck out of the tank.
Hopefully, this Jungle Labs treatment will do the trick for you and you won't have to deal with it again.
Again, good luck.
