I don't know why, but I have never had luck with otos in tank that was not planted. Any tank I have had with live plants, will keep otos alive for me. I don't think they are as fragile as they are made out to be either. I think one of the biggest things to keep in mind when keeping them is to feed them. They cannot live on the algae in your tank alone. I know I can be forgetful about this.

Grats on the ottos! One of my favorite as well. The only one I've ever had came with the tank when I rescued it. He was in some of the most horrific water conditions I've seen in person and he made it through with flying colors. He has since passed though, so I bet the poor care from his previous owner decreased his lifespan significantly. The fact that he survived it to begin with was a big surprise for me when I read about how their reputation for being sensitive.~Manna
