I find that setting the air pump on a folded towel does the trick for me for noise - some are quieter than others.

That's what we did with ours, the towel quiets the sound...The air pump we bought came with the back-flow preventer....can't remember the brand and model unfortunately, at work now

IF you are able, hanging it will nearly eliminate all sound because there is nothing to vibrate against.

my air pump is the tetra whisper pump. it's does it's job-no complaints

    +1 to mizzoutank.

Whisper is the one I've run for years, ultra quiet and dependable. The diaphragm seems to last forever.
Warning; Bulldog Pleco guarding my Sons tank now..

Got a pump tonight and added a 12" airstone to the tank. Really pleased with the effect and the fish seem to like it as they are in and out the bubbles constantly. I also found out its not easy taking a picture of bubbles on a blackberry so this was the best I could get. Tank was still abit cloudy but has now cleared up nicely.

Thanks again for all the advice, really appreciated.

Don't seem to have edit option now I am on phone but wanted to add the pump I bought was an Interpet AV1. Seems quite powerful and is very quiet. It has about 8 rubber feet under it that seem to absorb the noise very well.

My air pump is gone, I placed it on the floor and got all soaked.I didn,t know it needs a valve ,I thought some kind of backflow valve must be built in.Now I learn but too late .I will get one and the valve soon but first things first i need to buy a second filter .
So can my 10 gal tank with 3 goldfish ( i know, overstoked) survive couple of weeks without bubbles? I read here on forum ,for a tank in cycling process priority is filter not bubbles .,is that right?
