I was thinking back trying to remember when I got my first tank. It was a 10g and I am sure it was not stocked wisely. It must have been around 1980. I have had tanks on and off since then until about 2006 when I caught the MTS bug and now have multiple tanks. WOW a lot of things have changed in those 33 years, both in equipment and fish keeping information.

I officially started keeping fish probably 10+ yrs ago when I was younger, but after I moved to college I only kept a betta (was a horrible person and didn't realize the condition he was in weren't the greatest)

Then I took about 4 years off of having any fish. Caught the MTS bug really bad last October and have since bought a 55g and 5 10g (only 3 in use)

We had aquariums in most homes I lived in growing up, so I been around aquariums as long as I can remember. I got my first aquarium in of my own in 1995 or 1996 (can't remember exact year). I have never really been without one for to long after that.
If you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.

For 5 years or so I had a housemate/bandmate with many tanks in the mid 90s and it was so fascinating that I just sort of fell into keeping a few tanks.

Then, Travel due to work became an issue [Gone 3 weeks at time is not compatible with keeping fish] and fish got put on hold.

In 2009 I retired and bought my house I jumped back in with both feet [With a free starter tank from the same [Still has fish lol] old roomate ]. So - Nearly 10 For me.

Lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part.
Why pretend there are no stupid questions? Actually, There are many stupid questions: "Should I drink this bleach?" Is just one example.
Having said that, Just because it's a stupid question doesn't mean that it shouldn't be asked. It's better to know.

Got my first tank when I was about 11 or 12 years old, in the late 1950's.
By the time I was in my mid to late teens, I had about 12-15 tanks from 10 gals on up, and was breeding Tetras, Angels, Barbs, Danios, Gouramis and Bettas, selling the fry to LFS's at about 3 months old, for nickels & dimes.
Kept fish on & off, both fresh & saltwater, for the next 30-40 years, and in the past 5 years or so, I've concentrated on raising juvie discus, and selling them when they reached around 4" to 6".
Love discus above all else, inclusing SW fish.

11 votes and only 7 posts, c'mon people, let us know what you voted and how long you have been keeping fish.

I voted over 10 years, but it seems like since Abraham Lincoln was in third grade. I have been around fish tanks my entire life, many of my family members, both close and extended, keep fish. With the help of my sister and father I got my first 5 gallon when I was 5 years old, been keeping fish off an on ever since.
When I go fishing I just throw sharp rocks in the water and wait for the dead fish to float to the top... Kingfisher
Everything happens for a reason. Sometimes that reason is you are stupid and make bad decisions.

I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
Dear naps, sorry I hated you so much when I was a child... Love me
