Default new planted aquarium, questions on lighting

    0 Not allowed!
I just purchased a 55 gallon tank and stand. I wanted to try my hand at a planted aquarium. I just ordered 4 - 20 pound bags of Eco-complete substrate. I have read that the bag has 15 LBS of substrate and 5 LBS of water so I am not sure if 4 bags would be sufficient in a 55 gl tank.

The tank came with two light hoods, each holding one flourescent bulb with the following markings: "Eclipse Natural Daylight F15T8"

Would these bulbs be sufficient for plants or can I swap in a different bulb in the existing light hood? I really don't want to replace the entire lighting system at this point, maybe down the road. see photos attached

what would be the hardiest and easiest plants to start with for a beginner? I am planning a community tank with easy & hardy fish as well

    thanks in advance

Sorry but unless you are simply changing color spectrum [& you are not - you need more Watts] you cannot simply throw different bulbs in. You require a new fixture.

Lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part.
Why pretend there are no stupid questions? Actually, There are many stupid questions: "Should I drink this bleach?" Is just one example.
Having said that, Just because it's a stupid question doesn't mean that it shouldn't be asked. It's better to know.

For easy low light plants I have used this one on a 55 with a lot of success. Not expensive at all. Should be around $60 for a 4' light with shipping. http://www.kensfish.com/aquarium-sup...-t5-strip.html

Here are some good low light plants to give you a look at what will work in your tank.http://www.aquariumplants.com/category_s/190.htm

That pic it is the wisteria trimmings floating about while they root. I usually have either hygro polysperma or wisteria going crazy like that until I butcher them back to be ignored until they are out of control again.

They are both indestructible weeds IME lol.

    Crypts don't like any change.

OP has a low light system. Hygro can end up a bit wispy but it will grow. I've also had success with some of the darker tinted crypts, anubias, vallisneria, java mos and even pogostemon helferi did quite well in there. Rotala Rotundifolia also grew but rather slow.

I'd say avoid carpeting plants and just see what will do well
