Thread: Celebrating

Just wanted to celebrate, looks like my fish-in cycle on our original 20 gallon has completed and all the danios made it thru it. The last 3 days my ammonia and nitrite has been zero and nitrates are around 5 to 10 ppm.

We have a new 37g and a QT doing a fish less cycle so no new fish till they are ready (especially the QT) but it feels like a milestone to have 1 done.

I will continue to monitor the water daily for a while to be sure, but what a relief to not be doing the water changes every day or 2 now. Once a week is going to seem too easy now.

When I go fishing I just place a sharp rock in the water and sit there waiting for all the dead fish to float to the top... Kingfisher
Brutal honesty will be shown on this screen.
I think my fish is adjusting well to the four gallon, He's laying on his side attempting to go to sleep on the bottom of the gravel.
Tolerance is a great thing to have, so is the ability to shut up.

I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.

Congrats on your cycled tank - you should know though that there is no need to cycle a QT (I hope I read that correctly). The only thing you need to do is the run the filter for the QT in your newly cycled tank in order to cycle it also - let that smaller filter stay in your main tank until you need it and then just transfer it over to the QT - instant cycle!
46 gal fw tank with black skirt tetras, neon tetras, spotted corys, cherry barbs, otoclinus, snails & 4 amano shrimp - plastic & live plants
    5 gal QT
Remember: Our job is to take care of the water our fish live in

Normally I wouldn't cycle the QT, but I am changing filters from the ones that came with the kits, the media on the 20G is a biowheel that doesn't move easily to another filter, upgrading to a bigger tank as well as wanting to have the QT running for new fish, so I decided to cycle the new tank fishless and do the QT at the same time (both because of the filter change and also as an opportunity to learn more about fishless cycle thru experience)

After all the changes are done all the tanks will be running AC filters so I will have an extra smaller bag of biomax in the 37G ready to be pulled out for the QT tank when it is needed.

Thanks Slaphppy7 - I actually just read thru all 49 pages of your post as your experience felt similar to mine. The questions you asked and the answers given by the members here helped alot (and prevented me from having my own 49 page post lol)
