WOW what a steady hand... not!

Making it easy, doesn't need to be perfect, getting sanded all over another day!

2 units drying waiting for the back to be sealed

Bit of a mess..... this was only for testing. Plenty room for a timer and STC in this box too ;)
Used to try and keep track of my fish here.....

Ran out of room and time!!!

Instead I'll tell you the best piece of fishkeeping equipment ever....... Algae Scrubber :)

    Looks good Chris.

I love seeing the step by step pics.

I might have missed this info, but what type of LEDs did you use?

    Latest pics....

Still need to replace the mesh (no hurry for that one though as its got good growth), the pipe (as it doesn't sit in the end piece, I designed it for 21.5mm pipe which is in the garage, not the 25mm pipe) and the fixings to connect to the pump.

I'm going to be using a quick disconnect Garden hose fitting for easy maint by the wife.

Hey Cliff.... I'm pretty happy with it.

I just need to tidy it up around the edges. I broke my dremel last night so waiting on an Express delivery tomorrow of a new one, need it to do the new scrubber pipe and sanding.

Away to Korea on Thursday so really want this finished soon.

The LED's are 3w Star base 650nm Red grow LED's, The likes of Cree don't do a red you can buy anywhere online (although I believe they do one now direct to companies for use in LED units) so I just got generic ones online.

They are being driven by 700mA meanwell non dimmable drivers.

Got my 230 timer today so decided to prep the box for the STC-1000.

So here it is, area marked for the STC and kept clear inside, all wiring tidied and Drivers mounted on the sides of the box with air gap round them to prevent overheating.

Socket Neutrals connected but the lives need the STC to switch them so as yet not connected.

ATS (Algae Turf Scrubber) timer needs rotated 180 but that can wait till the STC turns up.

Once it's completed the timer will be siliconed into place, it's just poked through the rough hole at the moment.

Time for ATS is 21:00 to 09:00 at the moment. High light ATS's as this one is classes as (36w of LED over 48 square inches of usable mesh area) are recommended to use 12 hours of light to allow the algae to rest rather than the 18 on 6 off.

I am going to be working in Korea for a month as of Thursday so I will play with timings more when I get home, but for now the wife will just do a weekly cleaning and that's it.

    And chucked in place....

Planning on installing a digital PH and Salinity unit below this at some point. Nice and discrete out of the way, out of the humidity of the cabinet but also easy enough to access to check.

Well I'm surprised and delighted today.

Firstly my STC-1000 arrived so I've got it wired in and setup, bit of a relief really as it's a bit of an insurance policy with me being away a month at a time.
It never bothered me before but as soon as I identified the need I couldn't see past it lol

And secondly with running the skimmer I can honestly say I can see the difference in water clarity.

Since I upgraded from my nano 2 1/2 years ago I've never bothered with a skimmer, using an ATS I never really found a problem not using one.
I decided just to bite the bullet and get one though for this rescape, I have always had the space set asside for one so thought while investing in upgraded equimpment, the energy savings we were making on the LED lights and scrubber lights would allow a free extra piece of equimpment or two

Between trading my carbon for purigen and adding the skimmer I can honestly say when I walked into the livingroom this morning I got a fright, I thought there was no water in the tank lmao

I'll try uploading a vid to youtube of the tank as it was last night.

I was holding back a little as during the ammo/trite/trate spike there was a little algae grew on the rocks, a short green turf algae, the growth has slowed and my trates and phos are 0 again, also my long spined urchin is munching through it like a goodun.

Not the tank is just being allowed to settle for a month, no new fish, corals, the KH and Calc are now stable etc. Also I'm on my way to Korea as we speak lol

Video to follow in the next 24 hours or so.
