Aquarium Background: Need Assistance.
so, currently i'm facing a dilemma regarding an upcoming 3D background project. I can't find a waterproofing system which won't harm the fish and other aquatic life.
To get to the point quickly i need to know
1) what happens if I don't waterproof the cement covering the styrofoam?
2) Which product would you recommand me to use for waterproofing?
3) is epoxy resin ideal in my case?

Research plywood aquarium builds and you will find specific brands of resin based paints that you should be able to use for your project.
Lots of stuff on the net about plywood tanks that could apply to your project (even tho its for cement).

currently i'm using Sika Latex: an adhesive admixture for cement with a milking white colour. apparently it is solvent free and water based. i've already done a background with it for a turtle and it seems to be doing quite fine. yet somehow, i'm still sceptic eventhough there is no particular warnings which refers to aquatic life.
so does any 2part epoxy resin will do?

I've made tons of backgrounds and I've never coated any of them. I've had one in my main tank for a couple years now. I do suggest letting it cure for a week before putting it in the tank and if you have the time let it soak in the tank with water for about a week. Though I've done quick turns for people on backgrounds and didn't let them soak and the worst that happened was a raised Ph. Just keep an eye on things to be safe but I wouldn't stress it.Angel breeder wanna-be
