Question Those of you with low tech planted set ups...

    0 Not allowed!
What is your current set up?
root tabs? liquid/dry ferts? lights? tips/tricks?

    My set up:
    40b
    10 italian vals
    2 anubias
Finnex Fugeray...rates at about 40par on substrate (source: http://www.plantedtank.net/forums/sh...d.php?t=189944)
flourish root tabs near/under some plants
flourish comprehensive dosing 3ish times a week

I'm going for low tech/moderate lighting and I think(hope) I have it...but seeing how you all have pulled it off to learn from other set ups

When I had my 90 gallon as a low tech planted tank, I have mostly vals in it with both root tabs and fluorite substrate. I had the best luck with root feeding plants as I could use root tabs. I just did not want to have to worry about dosing ferts which (I believe) helped me keep the tank almost algae free. The vals did outstanding that way. I also had pretty good luck with a anubias as well.
If you take your time to do the research FIRST, you can successfully set-up and keep ANY type of aquarium with ease.

I have various low tech planted tanks [55 - 90 - 30L & 29] and use flourish tabs and comprehensive - It does the trick for me

EDIT: I am considering trying excel or similar although I haven't found that to be a requirement at all.

Good to hear I'm on the right track.

Plants are in their adjustment phase...and I hate seeming them fade initially.

@ Cliff: How often do you replace the root tabs?

@Goes to 11!: Same ? and how often do you dose the comprehensive?

I have excel, but its 50/50 on helping/melting my vals. so I'd rather not risk it if things are good the way they are. ya know?

I replace the flourish tabs every three months [Buy the 40 packs from amazon it's Way cheaper :-D ] & dose the comprehensive once a week [Or... occasionally twice if I cannot recall if I have already dosed :-P - for the most part ---> Once]

I actually have a gallon of Metricide 14 [Same chemical compound as excel -> 'Glutaraldehyde' but far Far FAR cheaper and almost twice as strong but I have not started using it yet since I have some major tank overhauls planned for the near future.

EDIT: I don't have vals btw

Well to add my 2 cents , yes to the root tabs good stuff there.

I also have Val's that over grow each other, I have given away a bunch of them in trade.

    Over a bed of Eco-complete.

Next tank will be larger with a lower layer of Fluorite to see any difference and also will be trying the dry ferts down the road also, thru the Tom Barr way. the EI deal.

    Any help that?

    Jeff

I do about the same as Goes to 11, I add new tabs about every three months or so.

Not to steal this thread away from the OP, but if I might ask a question about plants too. I recently purchased some Vals and some Java Ferns to add with my Amazon Swords. The Vals are very, very long. Is it OK to trim the tops of them, or should I just leave them alone? I have a 75g tank.
Also have anyone used all pupose fert tabs from Aquarium Plants.com? I was given a free bottle due to a delay in shipping, along with a bottle of Iron tabs. Again, are the Iron tabs good to use? Does using ferts increase your Nitrate levels any?

    mizzoutank,
I hope you don't mind me using your tread for some questions I had.
    Thank you,

You can trim tops but the rest of the leaf may well slowly deteriorate.

If you use very sharp scissors it will minimize the chances of the leaf dying.

This tank is as low tech as you can get
