Question Nitrate readings on my well stocked 29 gallon showing yellow (0 ppm) What's going on?

I think this is not normal. Aren't you supposed to show 'some' nitrates in a normal tank? (tank is 1 year old and well kept up) weekly water changes, no overfeeding. Aquaclear 50 filter. I AM following directions for using the liquid API test, could it be it is getting old?..........

With large weekly wcs in a heavily planted tank, with a low fish stocking level & light feedings, you may well get 0 nitrate readings, at least some of the time.
If that's not the case, then perhaps your test kit is either outdated, and the chemicals are not effective, or you're not shaking the chemical container vigorously enough or long enough, or both, per instructions.

if you don't have nitrites or ammonia (test nitrite) and if they read 0 than great.
when you have 0 nitrates it means you are doing an excellent job.
you probably have 1 or 2 ppm of nitrate but the api test kit can't pick it up

Make sure you shake that #2 bottle like it owes ya money. I literally slam the bottom of the bottle off the table a few times then shake for 2 minutes before adding the drops.
